Abandon

『Abandon』は、DEEP PURPLEが重いオルガン、ブルージーなギター、そしてしなやかなリズムを通して、長年培ってきたハード・ロックの語法を、力強く鳴らした作品だ。スティーヴ・モーズを迎えた新編成での2作目にあたり、前作『Purpendicular』で得た新鮮な感覚を、さらに推し進めている。各メンバーの卓越した技量は目立つが、あくまで中心にあるのは、バンド全体が生み出す一体感のあるグルーヴだ。 硬質で骨太なリフと、即興的で自由な余白とが、全編で自然に同居し、曲に生々しい熱を与えている。派手なスピードや、大掛かりな仕掛けに頼るのではなく、円熟した演奏者同士が、同じ部屋で反応し合う、その演奏の妙こそが本作の聴きどころである。ブルース・ロックを基盤にした、渋く力強いアンサンブルが全編を貫いている。 モーズの流麗なギターと、ドン・エイリー加入前のジョン・ロードによる重厚なオルガンとの対話は、この時期ならではの魅力に満ちている。円熟期のDEEP PURPLEらしい、演奏そのものの強さと深みを、じっくりと味わえる一枚だ。ベテランの余裕と、確かな演奏力が同居した、聴き応えのあるハード・ロック作品と言える。

Abandon is a record on which Deep Purple powerfully sounds its long-cultivated hard-rock idiom through heavy organ, bluesy guitar and supple rhythm. As the second album with the new lineup welcoming Steve Morse, it pushes the fresh sense gained on the previous Purpendicular further. Each member’s outstanding skill stands out, but at the center is the unified groove the whole band creates. Hard, sturdy riffs and improvisational, free space coexist naturally throughout, giving the songs a raw heat. Rather than relying on flashy speed or large-scale tricks, the very deftness of mature players responding to one another in the same room is the highlight. A cool, powerful ensemble based on blues rock runs throughout. The dialogue between Morse’s fluid guitar and Jon Lord’s weighty organ, before Don Airey’s arrival, is full of an appeal particular to this period. Letting you carefully savor the strength and depth of the playing itself in the manner of mature Deep Purple, it is an engaging hard-rock record where a veteran’s ease and sure playing coexist.
