Cockroach

『Cockroach』は、本来DANGER DANGERの第3作となるはずが、テッド・ポーリーの解雇とそれに続く訴訟によって長く未発表となっていた曰くつきの作品だ。1992年から93年にマイアミやケベックのモーリン・ハイツで録音されたが発売が凍結され、最終的に2001年、ポーリー版とポール・レイン版という二種類のヴォーカル・バージョンを収めた2枚組として世に出た。本盤はそのうちポール・レインが歌うバージョン(Vol.1)で、彼の技巧的で伸びやかな歌が全編を彩る。 ケイシー・スミス脱退後の録音のため、キーボードを抑えたギター中心の骨太なサウンドが特徴で、アンディ・ティモンズのギターが冴える。ラヴェルとウェストがプロデュースし、ポール・ノースフィールドが共同で手がけた。“Still Kickin'”“Good Time”“Walk It Like Ya Talk It”など、大きなコーラスと切れのよいギターがバンドの持ち味を素直に伝える。ジム・クローチェの名曲“Time in a Bottle”のカヴァーも収録。複雑な経緯を知らなくても、フックの強いメロディを存分に楽しめる、デビュー作とも並ぶバンド屈指の充実作である。

Cockroach is a notorious record: meant to be Danger Danger’s third album, it stayed unreleased for years after Ted Poley’s firing and the ensuing lawsuit. Recorded in 1992-93 in Miami and Morin Heights, Quebec, its release was frozen, and it finally appeared in 2001 as a double album holding two vocal versions — one by Poley, one by Paul Laine. This disc is the Paul Laine version (Vol. 1), his technical, expansive singing coloring the whole. Recorded after Kasey Smith’s departure, it features a beefy, guitar-centered sound with restrained keyboards, with Andy Timmons’ guitar shining. Ravel and West produced, co-produced by Paul Northfield. “Still Kickin',” “Good Time,” “Walk It Like Ya Talk It” and more plainly convey the band’s strengths with big choruses and crisp guitar. It also includes a cover of Jim Croce’s classic “Time in a Bottle.” Even without knowing the tangled history, its strong hooks are a full pleasure — a record ranking among the band’s best, alongside the debut.
