MAID IN JAPAN

『MAID IN JAPAN』は、BAND-MAIDの出発点にあるコンセプトと初期衝動を確認できる作品だ。後年の攻撃的なハードロックに比べると、まだ明るいポップ・ロックの質感を残しているが、“Be OK”や“KEY”には、すでに演奏を前へ押し出そうとするロック・バンドとしての意思がはっきりと刻まれている。 メイド姿という視覚的な世界観と、本格的なバンド・サウンドとのギャップという核は、この時点から明確だ。“Ever Green”“Knockin' on your heart”のようにメロディを大切にした曲、“Big Dad”“Forward”のように勢いを見せる曲、そして“愛と情熱のマタドール”“Summer Drive”のように遊び心のある曲が並び、後の複雑なアレンジへ至る前の瑞々しさが全体を包んでいる。 まだ荒削りな部分もあるが、そのぶん結成初期ならではの熱量と素直さが強く伝わってくる。ハードさよりも歌の親しみやすさが前に出る場面も多く、後年の攻撃的なサウンドとの違いを楽しめるのも初期作ならではだ。SAIKIの力強い歌を含め、メンバーそれぞれの個性が芽吹き始める瞬間を捉えた、BAND-MAIDの成長を追ううえで欠かせない初期の重要な記録である。
