『Total 13』は、BACKYARD BABIESがパンクの性急さ、グラムの派手さ、ハード・ロックのリフを荒々しく混ぜた第2作だ。ドレゲンのヘラコプターズ活動による休止を経て、1997年のEPで再始動したバンドが1998年に叩きつけた再出発作である。エントゥームドらを手がけたトーマス・スコッグスベリがプロデュースした。短く鋭い曲が続き、演奏は常に少し危険な熱を帯びている。ニューヨーク・ドールズ、ラモーンズ、ダムドといった先達の影も濃い一枚だ。 汚れたギターと挑発的なメロディが、洗練されすぎない魅力を作る。“Made Me Madman”から“U.F.O. Romeo”“Highlights”“Look at You”“Subculture Hero”まで、13曲を39分で駆け抜ける構成に無駄はない。本国ではゴールドを獲得し、グラミス賞のベスト・ハード・ロック/メタル部門に輝いた。シングル“Bombed (Out of My Mind)”のB面ではハノイ・ロックスのマイケル・モンローが歌い、アリス・クーパーの前座として英国も回っている。退屈を吹き飛ばすロックンロールの衝動をそのまま封じ込めた、バンドの出世作である。

Total 13 is the second album, roughly mixing punk urgency, glam flash and hard rock riffs. After the hiatus caused by Dregen's Hellacopters work, the band restarted with a 1997 EP and slammed this restart record down in 1998. Thomas Skogsberg, known for Entombed among others, produced. Short, sharp songs follow one another, and the playing always carries a slightly dangerous heat. The shadows of forerunners like the New York Dolls, the Ramones and The Damned lie heavy over it. Dirty guitar and provocative melody make an appeal that isn't over-refined. From “Made Me Madman” through “U.F.O. Romeo,” “Highlights,” “Look at You” and “Subculture Hero,” there's no waste in a structure that runs 13 songs in 39 minutes. It went gold at home and won a Grammis in the Best Hard Rock/Metal category. On the B-side of the single “Bombed (Out of My Mind),” Hanoi Rocks' Michael Monroe sings, and they toured the UK supporting Alice Cooper. Sealing in the rock 'n' roll impulse that blows boredom away — the record that broke them.
