Making Enemies Is Good

『Making Enemies Is Good』は、BACKYARD BABIESが持つストリート・ロックの荒さとパンクの速度を、鋭いギター・リフでまとめた第3作だ。2001年に発表され、本国のアルバム・チャートで初の首位を獲得。前作に続きグラミス賞も受賞した。曲は短くても、フレーズの引っ掛かりが強い。前作の混沌を制御した作風とも評され、荒さと構築性の均衡がよく取れている。ニッケ・ボリの歌にも一段と余裕が生まれ、ドレゲンのギターはより歌うようになった。13曲を一息に聴かせるだけの密度と勢いがある。 ダーティーな雰囲気の中に、意外なほどポップなメロディが潜んでいる。冒頭の“I Love to Roll”から、シングルとなった“The Clash”や“Brand New Hate”へ。後者はザ・ワイルドハーツのジンジャーとの共作で、彼は本作の複数曲に関わっている。“Colours”“Star War”“Ex-Files”“Painkiller”まで粒ぞろいで、捨て曲がない。この後バンドはモーターヘッドと帯同し、AC/DCの前座も務めることになる。反骨心を飾りにせず、音そのものの勢いで押し切るロックンロール盤である。

Making Enemies Is Good is the third album, gathering Backyard Babies' street-rock roughness and punk speed with sharp guitar riffs. Released in 2001, it took their first No. 1 on the home album chart and won a Grammis, as the previous record had. The songs are short but the phrases catch hard. Described as controlling the previous record's chaos, it balances roughness and structure well. Nicke Borg's singing gained more ease and Dregen's guitar became more song-like. It has the density and drive to carry 13 songs in one breath. Inside the dirty atmosphere, surprisingly pop melodies lurk. From the opener “I Love to Roll” to the singles “The Clash” and “Brand New Hate” — the latter co-written with The Wildhearts' Ginger, who was involved in several songs here. “Colours,” “Star War,” “Ex-Files” and “Painkiller” are all strong; there's no filler. After this the band would tour with Motörhead and open for AC/DC. Not making rebellion an ornament but pushing through on the momentum of the sound itself — a rock 'n' roll record.
