Nightmare

『Nightmare』は、2009年12月に急逝したドラマー、ジェイムズ・“ザ・レヴ”・サリヴァンへの追悼という重い背景を持つ第5作だ。ザ・レヴは本作の楽曲制作に深く関わっていたが、録音前に世を去った。バンドは活動継続を選び、DREAM THEATERのマイク・ポートノイをセッション・ドラマーに迎えて本作を完成させた。プロデュースはマイク・エリゾンド。悲しみと再起の意志が、ヘヴィネスと叙情の中に色濃く刻まれている。 表題曲“Nightmare”が緊張感を持って幕を開け、“Welcome to the Family”“Buried Alive”は劇的な展開を見せる。シニスター・ゲイツが書いた“So Far Away”はザ・レヴへの追悼歌であり、ザ・レヴ自身が残した“Fiction”は彼の遺作となった。米ビルボード200で初登場1位を獲得し、当時大きな話題を呼んだ。アルバムには怒りや哀悼、そして再生への意志が交錯し、ヘヴィな楽曲の中にも深い感情の起伏が息づく。ポートノイの正確で力強いドラムが、悲劇の後のバンドを力強く支えた。喪失を乗り越えてバンドが前へ進む姿を刻んだ、感情的にも重要な一枚である。

Nightmare is the fifth album, carrying the heavy background of a tribute to drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan, who died suddenly in December 2009. The Rev had been deeply involved in writing the material but passed away before recording. The band chose to continue, completing the album with Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy as session drummer. Mike Elizondo produced. Grief and the will to rise again are marked deeply within its heaviness and lyricism. The title track "Nightmare" opens with tension, and "Welcome to the Family" and "Buried Alive" show dramatic development. "So Far Away," written by Synyster Gates, is a memorial to The Rev, and "Fiction," which The Rev himself left behind, became his final song. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and drew great attention at the time. Marking the band moving forward past loss, it is an emotionally important record.
