『Astra』は、ジョン・ウェットンの伸びやかな歌とジェフ・ダウンズの重層的なキーボードを中心に、ASIAがより硬くエッジのある音へと進んだ第3作だ。ギターにはスティーヴ・ハウに代わってマンディ・メイヤーが加わり、前2作とは少し異なる押し出しを作り出している。メロディの美しさは保ちつつ、サウンドにはよりストレートなロックの手触りが加わっている。 “Go”の力強いフックや“Too Late”の切なさ、“Wishing”“Voice of America”といった楽曲は、バンドが持つポップな構築美をよく示している。“Rock and Roll Dream”“Countdown to Zero”“Suspicion”のような楽曲にも、ドラマティックな展開が息づいている。“Hard on Me”“Love Now”“Born to Lose”といった楽曲にも、洗練されたメロディとドラマ性が息づいている。ジェフ・ダウンズを中心とする演奏は重厚でありながらメロディの明快さを失わず、オリジナル期を締めくくる陰影に富んだ一枚となっている。プログレッシヴな背景と80年代アリーナ・ロックの感覚を結び付けた本作は、陰影に富んだ、聴き応えのある一枚である。商業的な成功は前2作に及ばなかったものの、その音楽的な充実は今なお再評価に値する内容を備えている。

Astra is the third album on which ASIA moved toward a harder, edgier sound, centered on John Wetton’s soaring singing and Geoff Downes’ layered keyboards. On guitar, Mandy Meyer joined in place of Steve Howe, creating a slightly different push from the previous two albums. Keeping the beauty of the melody, the sound gains a more straightforward rock feel. The strong hook of “Go,” the wistfulness of “Too Late,” and songs like “Wishing” and “Voice of America” show the band’s pop constructive beauty well. Songs like “Rock and Roll Dream,” “Countdown to Zero” and “Suspicion” breathe dramatic development too. Binding a progressive background to a 1980s arena-rock feel, it is a shadow-rich, rewarding record. Though its commercial success did not match the previous two albums, its musical fullness still holds content worthy of reappraisal.
