Aqua

『Aqua』は、ジョン・ペインをヴォーカル／ベースに迎え、ASIAが新しい編成で進み始めた再始動作だ。唯一の中心メンバーとして残ったジェフ・ダウンズの鍵盤は壮麗な空気を作り、多彩なゲスト・ミュージシャンたちが曲ごとに異なる色を与えている。オリジナル期の顔であったジョン・ウェットンに代わり、力強く伸びやかなペインの歌声が、バンドに新たな輪郭をもたらした。1980年代半ばの活動休止を経て、ジェフ・ダウンズが再びバンド名を掲げて始動させたのが本作である。壮麗なキーボードを基盤にしたサウンドは、オリジナル期の名残を感じさせつつも、ペインの声によって新鮮な生命力を得ており、第二期の幕開けを飾るにふさわしい意欲的な内容だ。 大きな物語性を持つ楽曲と、親しみやすい歌メロが自然に共存し、アルバムは再始動期らしい探索の表情を見せている。ダウンズのキーボードを軸に、従来のASIAが持っていた壮大さと洗練を受け継ぎながら、新しい声とともにその表現を更新している。オリジナル・ラインナップの解散を経て、バンドがどのように歩みを続けるのかを示した本作は、第二期ASIAの出発点として重要な意味を持つ一枚である。ダウンズの一貫した美意識が、編成の変化を超えてバンドの核を保っている。

Aqua is a restart album on which ASIA began moving with a new lineup, welcoming John Payne on vocals and bass. The keyboards of Geoff Downes — the only core member remaining — create a magnificent air, and varied guest musicians give each song a different color. In place of John Wetton, the face of the original period, Payne’s strong, soaring voice brought the band a new outline. Songs with large narrative and accessible vocal melodies coexist naturally, and the album shows the exploratory look of a restart period. Centered on Downes’ keyboards, it inherits the grandeur and refinement the old ASIA had while updating that expression with a new voice. Showing how the band would continue after the dissolution of the original lineup, it is a record of important meaning as the starting point of the second-era ASIA, with Downes’ consistent aesthetic keeping the band’s core across the change of lineup.
