『Alpha』は、ASIAが壮大なキーボード、滑らかなギター、ジョン・ウェットンの情感ある歌を中心に、よりコンパクトで洗練された楽曲へと向かった第2作だ。キング・クリムゾン、イエス、ELPといった名門バンド出身のメンバーが集ったスーパーグループとして、彼らは技巧を見せつけるよりも、大きなメロディの輪郭を際立たせることを優先している。前作の世界的な成功を受け、バンドはより歌を中心に据えたアプローチを深めた。 “Don't Cry”“The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”“The Heat Goes On”“Eye to Eye”といった楽曲では、明るさと切なさが同時に立ち上がり、覚えやすいコーラスと端正な演奏が理想的に結び付いている。“Never In a Million Years”“Open Your Eyes”“True Colors”のような楽曲にも、バンドの高い作曲力が息づいている。“My Own Time (I'll Do What I Want)”“The Last to Know”のような楽曲にも、洗練された魅力が漂っている。前作の勢いを受け、より緻密なプロダクションと明快なメロディが際立つ本作は、80年代AORの一つの規範を示した。大きな音像の中で歌をまっすぐに届ける本作は、プログレッシヴ・ロックの経験を洗練されたポップ・ロックへと昇華させた、ASIAらしい充実作である。

Alpha is the second album on which ASIA turned toward more compact, refined songs centered on grand keyboards, smooth guitar and John Wetton’s emotive singing. As a supergroup gathering members from prestigious bands such as King Crimson, Yes and ELP, they prioritized making the outline of big melody stand out over showing off technique. Following the previous album’s worldwide success, the band deepened a more song-centered approach. On “Don't Cry,” “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes,” “The Heat Goes On” and “Eye to Eye,” brightness and wistfulness rise at once, with memorable choruses and neat playing joining ideally. Songs like “Never In a Million Years,” “Open Your Eyes” and “True Colors” breathe the band’s high writing too. Delivering the singing straight within a large sonic image, it is an ASIA-style full work that sublimated progressive-rock experience into refined pop rock.
