『Asia』は、複雑な演奏を消化したメンバーたちが、簡潔で大きなメロディへ向かったデビュー作だ。本作は、キング・クリムゾンやUK出身のジョン・ウェットン(ベース/ヴォーカル)、イエス出身のスティーヴ・ハウ(ギター)とジェフ・ダウンズ(キーボード)、ELP出身のカール・パーマー(ドラム)という、プログレッシヴ・ロックの名手が集ったスーパーグループの第一作である。以後、ダウンズはバンド唯一の不動のメンバーであり続ける。キーボードの広がり、硬質なギター、力強いリズムが、曲ごとに雄大な景色を作り出す。 “Heat of the Moment”の即効性から“Only Time Will Tell”の叙情、“Sole Survivor”の高揚まで、アルバムは技巧を見せるためではなく、歌の高揚感を最大化するために使う。MTV時代の幕開けとともに“Heat of the Moment”が大ヒットし、本作は全米1位を9週にわたって記録、1982年の世界的なベストセラー・アルバムとなった。“Wildest Dreams”や“Here Comes the Feeling”のような楽曲も、緻密な演奏と大きな歌を両立させている。ロジャー・ディーンによる幻想的なジャケットも含め、本作は時代を象徴する一枚となった。プログとAORの接点を世界規模のポップ・ロックへ変えた、輝かしい一枚である。

Asia is the debut album, on which members who had digested complex playing headed toward concise, big melody. This is the first work of a supergroup gathering masters of progressive rock: John Wetton (bass/vocals) of King Crimson and UK, Steve Howe (guitar) and Geoff Downes (keyboards) of Yes, and Carl Palmer (drums) of ELP. From then on, Downes would remain the band's sole constant member. Expansive keyboards, hard-edged guitar and powerful rhythm create a majestic scene in each song. From the immediacy of "Heat of the Moment" to the lyricism of "Only Time Will Tell" and the elation of "Sole Survivor," the album uses its skill not to show technique but to maximize the exaltation of the singing. With the dawn of the MTV era, "Heat of the Moment" became a huge hit, and the album reached US number 1 for nine weeks, becoming the best-selling album worldwide of 1982. A brilliant record that turned the meeting point of prog and AOR into world-scale pop-rock.
