『Fistful of Metal』は、ANTHRAXが、NWOBHM(ニュー・ウェイヴ・オブ・ブリティッシュ・ヘヴィ・メタル)の、鋼鉄のような硬質感と、ハードコア・パンク由来の、爆発的な速度とを結び付けた、鮮烈なデビュー作だ。ニューヨークの地下シーンから飛び出した本作は、ニール・タービンのヴォーカルを擁している。スコット・イアンと、ダン・スピッツのギターは、まだ粗削りながらも、確かな切れ味を持ち、チャーリー・ベナンテの、手数の多いドラムが、全編を、力強くせき立てていく。 冒頭“Deathrider”の力強い推進力、そして代表曲“Metal Thrashing Mad”の攻撃性まで、収録曲には、後のバンドを形作る、あの攻撃性と、遊び心とが、すでに、はっきりと宿っている。“Soldiers of Metal”“Death from Above”“Panic”のような曲も、初期衝動を伝えている。アリス・クーパーの“I'm Eighteen”のカヴァーも収録された、意欲的な内容だ。 洗練された完成度よりも、ニューヨークの地下シーンから、飛び出したばかりの、その荒々しくも力強いエネルギーを、じっくりと味わいたい一枚だ。後に、スラッシュ・メタルの「四天王(Big Four)」の一角へと成長していく、その輝かしいキャリアの原点が、ここにはっきりと刻まれている。若きANTHRAXの、初期衝動に満ちた、力強い名デビュー作と言える。バンドの出発点を知る一枚だ。

Fistful of Metal is a vivid debut on which Anthrax binds the steel-like hardness of NWOBHM (the New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and the explosive speed derived from hardcore punk. Bursting out of the New York underground scene, it features Neil Turbin on vocals. Scott Ian and Dan Spitz’s guitars, while still rough, have a sure edge, and Charlie Benante’s busy drums powerfully drive the whole. From the powerful drive of the opener “Deathrider” to the aggression of the signature “Metal Thrashing Mad,” the songs already clearly hold the aggression and playfulness that would form the later band, while cuts like “Soldiers of Metal,” “Death from Above” and “Panic” convey the initial impulse. Ambitious content that also includes a cover of Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen.” A record on which one wants to savor the rough yet powerful energy of a band that had just burst from the New York underground scene, rather than refined polish. The origin of the brilliant career of a band that would later grow into a corner of thrash metal’s “Big Four” is clearly inscribed here. A powerful debut full of young Anthrax’s initial impulse — a record for knowing the band’s starting point.
