Night in the Ruts puts Aerosmith’s blues-rooted grit, street-level swagger and raw nervous energy in the foreground. Steven Tyler sings as though the emotions are still happening in real time, allowing strain and instability to become part of the album’s character. Around him, the guitars and rhythm section move through a dusty, rough-edged groove that favors friction over polish. Its power comes not from looking perfectly controlled, but from sounding alive enough to break apart at any moment. The straight-ahead charge of “No Surprize,” the snap of “Chiquita,” the hard push of “Three Mile Smile” and the shadowed atmosphere of “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” reveal different sides of the band’s language. The album is not interested in seamless elegance; its unevenness gives the music urgency and a human scale. Beneath the glamour associated with seventies Aerosmith, it exposes a stubborn blues-rock band still fighting to move forward. That tension gives the record a documentary-like force and a character few cleaner albums could reproduce.
