Predator

『Predator』は、ACCEPTの硬質なリフと、ウド・ダークシュナイダーの切り裂くような歌声を、より現代的な重さで鳴らした第11作だ。短く強いフレーズを積み重ねていく演奏は、バンドの基本にある直進的な推進力を、改めてはっきりと示している。ウド在籍時、第二期の最後を飾ることになった作品である。 冒頭“Hard Attack”の攻撃性、“Crossroads”のグルーヴ、表題曲“Predator”の重さ、そして“Diggin' in the Dirt”“Lay It Down”まで、収録曲はいずれも硬派な魅力を備えている。前作『Death Row』の陰鬱さから、やや直球のヘヴィ・メタルへと軸足を戻しつつ、90年代らしいモダンな重量感も保っている。 派手な装飾を加えるよりも、ギターの鋭い刻みと、リズム隊の力強い押し出しで聴かせる、無駄のない構成が印象的だ。緊張感のある正統派ヘヴィ・メタルを求めるときに、ACCEPTの骨太な魅力を再確認できる一枚である。“It Ain't Over Yet”“Crucified”のような曲でも、鋭いギターの刻みと力強い押し出しが結び付いている。ウド・ダークシュナイダーとの長きにわたる共同作業の、一つの区切りを刻んだ、力強く充実した作品と言える。

Predator is the eleventh album on which Accept sounds its hard riffs and Udo Dirkschneider’s slashing voice with a more modern weight. The playing, stacking short, strong phrases, again clearly shows the band’s basic straight drive. It became the record capping the second Udo era. From the aggression of the opener “Hard Attack” and the groove of “Crossroads” to the weight of the title track “Predator” and “Diggin’ in the Dirt” and “Lay It Down,” every song carries a hard-edged appeal. Shifting its footing back from the gloom of the previous Death Row toward a more straight-ahead heavy metal, it also keeps a modern 1990s weight. A waste-free construction that wins on the sharp chop of the guitar and the powerful push of the rhythm section, rather than adding flashy decoration, is striking. It is a record that reaffirms Accept’s sturdy appeal when you want tense traditional heavy metal. Marking a break in the long collaboration with Udo Dirkschneider, it is a powerful, fulfilling work.
