Eat the Heat

『Eat the Heat』は、新ヴォーカリストのデイヴィッド・リースを迎えたACCEPTが、従来よりもメロディックで、広がりのある方向へと踏み込んだ異色の作品だ。ウルフ・ホフマンのギターは依然として鋭いが、曲はフックやコーラスの比重を大きくし、アメリカ市場も意識したような、洗練されたサウンドを志向している。 冒頭“X-T-C”のキャッチーさ、“Prisoner”の勢い、“Generation Clash”のドラマ性、そして“D-Train”“Turn the Wheel”まで、収録曲はメロディックな魅力を前面に押し出している。ウド・ダークシュナイダーの強烈な個性とは異なる、リースの伸びやかで正統的なハード・ロック・ヴォーカルが、バンドに新鮮な表情を与えている。 ACCEPTの定番的なイメージからは距離があるからこそ、バンドが持つ別の可能性を垣間見ることができる一枚だ。重厚な演奏力を保ったまま、新しい声とサウンドを大胆に試している。結果的に一作限りの体制となったが、“Chain Reaction”“Mistreated”のような曲でも、メロディックなフックと鋭いギターが結び付いている。ACCEPTの多面性を知るうえで興味深い、過渡期ならではの意欲作と言える。

Eat the Heat is an unusual work on which Accept, welcoming new vocalist David Reece, stepped into a more melodic, expansive direction than before. Wolf Hoffmann’s guitar is still sharp, but the songs place greater weight on hooks and choruses, aiming for a refined sound seemingly mindful of the American market too. From the catchiness of the opener “X-T-C” and the momentum of “Prisoner” to the drama of “Generation Clash” and “D-Train” and “Turn the Wheel,” the songs foreground a melodic appeal. Reece’s soaring, orthodox hard-rock vocal, unlike Udo Dirkschneider’s powerful character, gives the band a fresh face. Precisely because it stands apart from Accept’s standard image, it is a record that lets you glimpse another possibility of the band. Keeping its weighty playing, it boldly tries a new voice and sound. Though it became a one-album lineup as a result, it is an intriguing, ambitious work particular to a transitional period, for understanding Accept’s many sides.
