2. Embryonic Period: Departure from UFO and Thirst for Independence (1978-1979)

2.1 In the Shadow of Glory: The End of the UFO Era

In the mid-1970s, at the tender age of 19, Michael Schenker joined the British band UFO, leading them to global success starting with the album Phenomenon (1974). However, just before the release of the famous live album Strangers in the Night (1979), he departed from the band.

The reasons for his departure were multifaceted. Conflicts with UFO vocalist Phil Mogg, mental exhaustion from grueling tour schedules, and a breakdown in communication due to his own lack of English proficiency led to alcohol and drug dependency. Furthermore, Michael possessed an intense desire to pursue his artistic vision rather than commercial success. As he later remarked, "They were chasing success, but I had my own vision," the democratic decision-making process of UFO had become a shackle restricting his originality.

2.2 Temporary Return to Scorpions and Separation

Following his exit from UFO, Michael participated in the recording of the album Lovedrive (1979) by the Scorpions, led by his older brother Rudolf Schenker. Initially planned as a guest appearance, his playing was deemed indispensable to the band, leading him to join the tour as an official member.

However, keenly feeling that his freedom was once again restricted within an established band structure—especially under brother Rudolf's strong leadership—Michael suddenly went missing during the tour. This can be seen as an inevitable rite of passage for him to break away from his role as the "younger brother" and form his own band where he held absolute leadership.

2.3 Formation of MSG and Trial and Error in Member Selection

In 1979, Michael relocated to London and began moving toward forming his own band. It is well known that during this period he auditioned for the position left vacant by Joe Perry's departure from Aerosmith, and received an invitation from Ozzy Osbourne, but Michael declined them all, choosing instead to build his own castle.

In the early rehearsal sessions (commonly known as MSG No. 1), American musicians Billy Sheehan on bass and Denny Carmassi on drums participated. However, since Michael was seeking a wetter, more shaded British rock feeling, this lineup did not last. Ultimately, he discovered an unknown vocalist, Gary Barden. While Gary's singing ability was not technically perfect, his bluesy and melancholy vocal quality showed an exquisite affinity with Michael's melodies.

In protest, Cozy Powell and others also left the band (with Cozy eventually moving to Whitesnake), collapsing the golden lineup.

During a warm-up gig at Sheffield Polytechnic right after the album's release, Graham took the stage in an intoxicated state, forgot the lyrics, and ultimately caused a scandal by unzipping his trousers and exposing his genitals. The perfectionist Michael was furious and immediately fired Graham (though differences in musical direction and personal issues are also said to have had an influence).

4.3 Return of Gary Barden and Challenging the American Market

Facing the crisis of a cancelled tour, the band hastily recalled former vocalist Gary Barden. For the fourth album Built to Destroy (1983), aiming at the American market, they pursued a catchier, more polished sound, employing Jack Douglas, known as a producer for Aerosmith, for the remix.
