Liner Notes
Save Yourself is the second album under the name “McAuley Schenker Group,” by Michael Schenker and Robin McAuley. It pushes the refined melodic-rock direction shown on the previous Perfect Timing further. Around the singing Flying-V guitar melody, big choruses and catchy, powerful songs line up throughout. McAuley’s expressive vocals greatly drive the work’s appeal.
A record strongly reflecting the flamboyant melodic-hard-rock air from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Rather than being caught by flashy signature songs alone, following the sonic center, the deft placement of choruses and the natural flow between songs, a rich expression as a whole album comes into view. Schenker’s guitar, keeping its outstanding songcraft, beautifully colors the songs. Sensitively taking in the era’s change, the sure feel at the band’s core — Schenker’s guitar and McAuley’s singing — is not lost in the least. A record with a more refined, open appeal, different from the early hard-edged style. It is a melodic, fulfilling work representative of the McAuley Schenker Group era.
