The first Japanese edition was PPD-1045, on 5 September 1989, followed in 1990 by a limited digipak with a 24-page booklet (PPD-2007). Later reissues are PHCR-14512 (21 November 1996) and UICY-78622 (14 March 2018, a Universal Music budget edition).

Not Fakin' It is Michael Monroe's second solo album, released by Mercury Records in September 1989. He had signed to Mercury the year before, and this was the first of his solo records to come out through major distribution; it reached number 161 on the Billboard 200.
Michael Frondelli and Monroe produced it together. Phil Grande plays guitar, John Regan and Kenny Aaronson share the bass, and Anton Fig and Thommy Price share the drums. Little Steven is closely involved as a backing vocalist, arranger and writer, and the writing credits also include Nasty Suicide of Hanoi Rocks and members of Nazareth. George Marino mastered.
Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses appears in the video for "Dead, Jail or Rock 'n' Roll", which MTV aired on an episode of Headbangers Ball that Monroe himself hosted. On New Year's Eve 1989 and New Year's Day 1990 he played the Tokyo Dome on a bill with Bryan Adams, Don Henley, Huey Lewis and Loudness.
