MICHAEL MONROE
Biography
At a glance
Michael Monroe was born Matti Antero Kristian Fagerholm in Helsinki on 17 June 1962. He is best known as the frontman of Hanoi Rocks, formed in 1980, and he has recorded under his own name for close to forty years since that band broke up in 1985.
He sings and plays saxophone, harmonica, guitar and piano, and on some records takes the bass and drums himself as well. The design has not changed since his solo debut: three-minute songs written in the vocabulary of glam rock and punk rock, gathered into albums that run around forty minutes.
There are eleven solo studio albums, from Nights Are So Long in 1987 to Outerstellar in 2026, alongside the 2010 live album Another Night in the Sun: Live in Helsinki and Take Them and Break Them, a 2002 EP released only in Japan.
Before Hanoi Rocks — Helsinki, 1976 to 1979
As a teenager he played in a band called Madness. While rehearsing in a church basement in the Töölö district he met Antti Hulkko of Briard — later Andy McCoy — who was practising in the next room. That meeting is where Hanoi Rocks begins.
Hanoi Rocks — 1980 to 1985
Monroe and McCoy formed Hanoi Rocks in 1980. Five albums followed, from the 1981 debut Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks to Two Steps from the Move in 1984. That year Sounds readers voted them the second best band in the world and named Monroe Sex Symbol of the Year.
On 8 December 1984, during a US tour, drummer Razzle — Nicholas Dingley — was killed in a car accident. Monroe had broken his ankle and was at the hotel rather than in the car. The band broke up the following year.
Hanoi Rocks has a page of its own on this site; what follows here is Michael Monroe's solo career.
New York and the solo debut — 1985 to 1989
In the autumn of 1985 he sang backing vocals on Steven Van Zandt's "Sun City" alongside Stiv Bators and appeared in the video shot in New York. That December he announced he was moving to New York, and he put his first solo band together in 1986.
Nights Are So Long, his solo debut, followed in 1987. It was recorded at North Lake Sound Studios in White Plains, New York, and released by Finland's Yahoo! Records, with Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople guesting on piano. The Japanese edition came out on 5 September 1987 on H.I.T. Avenue Records.
He signed to Mercury Records in 1988 and released Not Fakin' It the following year. Little Steven was closely involved as a writer, arranger and backing vocalist, and the album reached number 161 on the Billboard 200. Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses appears in the video for "Dead, Jail or Rock 'n' Roll", which MTV aired on an episode of Headbangers Ball that Monroe himself hosted. On New Year's Eve 1989 and New Year's Day 1990 he played the Tokyo Dome on a bill with Bryan Adams, Don Henley, Huey Lewis and Loudness.
Jerusalem Slim and Demolition 23. — 1990 to 1994
In 1990 he formed Jerusalem Slim with Steve Stevens, formerly of the Billy Idol band, and Sami Yaffa. The album appeared in 1992, but Monroe and Stevens disagreed about the music and the band ended.
His connection with Guns N' Roses runs through this period: he played harmonica and saxophone on "Bad Obsession" from Use Your Illusion I in 1991, and sang the Dead Boys cover "Ain't It Fun" on "The Spaghetti Incident?" in 1993.
In 1994 he formed Demolition 23. with Sami Yaffa, Jimmy Clark and Nasty Suicide of Hanoi Rocks, and released the album Little Steven produced. Japanese and European tours went well, but the band ended when Nasty Suicide announced he was leaving music.
Back to the solo name — 1996 to 2009
Peace of Mind, his third solo album, came out on Finland's Poko Rekords in 1996. On Life Gets You Dirty in 1999 Andy McCoy shares a writing credit — the two names together again fourteen years after Hanoi Rocks broke up. Monroe plays most of both records himself.
Jude Wilder, whom he had married in 1989, died of a brain haemorrhage on 19 June 2001. Hanoi Rocks reformed the following year, and the Japan-only EP Take Them and Break Them appeared in the same year. 2003 brought both his fifth solo album, Whatcha Want, and Hanoi Rocks' first album back, Twelve Shots on the Rocks.
Hanoi Rocks released Another Hostile Takeover in 2005 and Street Poetry in 2007 before McCoy and Monroe announced in 2008 that the band was finished. In April 2009 they played eight sold-out farewell shows over six nights at the Tavastia Club in Helsinki, with Nasty Suicide guesting on the last three.
The Michael Monroe band — 2010 to now
A press conference in Los Angeles on 25 January 2010 launched the new band: Sami Yaffa on bass, Ginger and Todd Youth on guitars and Jimmy Clark on drums. After the first shows Todd Youth was replaced by Steve Conte and Jimmy Clark by Karl Rockfist. The live album Another Night in the Sun: Live in Helsinki followed that September, and the band signed to Spinefarm / Universal.
Jack Douglas produced the 2011 studio album Sensory Overdrive, on which Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead and Lucinda Williams guest; Classic Rock magazine named it Album of the Year. Ginger left that summer and Dregen of Backyard Babies took his place.
Horns and Halos went to number one on the Finnish album chart in 2013 and was certified gold four days after release. Dregen left on 6 March 2014 to concentrate on his own work and Rich Jones joined; the line-up of Monroe, Steve Conte, Rich Jones, Sami Yaffa and Karl Rockfist has not changed since.
Blackout States followed in 2015, One Man Gang in 2019 after a move to Silver Lining Music, and I Live Too Fast to Die Young! in 2022, with Slash guesting on the title track. The eleventh solo album, Outerstellar, arrived on 20 February 2026.

In Japan
Three companies have handled the Japanese editions in turn: Mercury from 1993 to 1996 (PHCR-), Steamhammer through Crown Tokuma Music from 1999 to 2003 (CRCL-), and Victor Entertainment from 2010 onwards (VICP- and VIZP-). The Victor-era editions usually carry bonus tracks: two on Sensory Overdrive, four on Horns and Halos — two of them recorded live at V-ROCK FESTIVAL '11 — and one on the standard Blackout States with a second on its deluxe edition.
One Man Gang, I Live Too Fast to Die Young! and Outerstellar each have a limited deluxe edition sold only in Japan, and the 2002 EP Take Them and Break Them was never distributed anywhere else.
Six Japanese shows from 25 November to 2 December 2026 have been announced as MICHAEL MONROE JAPAN TOUR 2026, taking in Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Aichi and Tokyo. The two nights at EX THEATER ROPPONGI were billed with separate sets: "A Celebration of HANOI ROCKS" on 1 December and "1987-2026 SOLO YEARS" on 2 December. Creativeman Productions promotes the tour with the cooperation of Victor Entertainment.
