1. Definition and Origins of the Genre

Killswitch Engage (hereinafter referred to as KsE) is a metalcore band formed in 1999 in Westfield, Massachusetts, United States. Killswitch Engage is widely recognized as a central and iconic figure in the movement known as the "New Wave of American Heavy Metal (NWOAHM)," which emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The musical characteristics of Killswitch Engage lie in the fusion of aggressive rhythms and breakdowns derived from hardcore punk with melodic guitar melodies influenced by European death metal, particularly Swedish melodic death metal.

Particularly noteworthy is their contribution to establishing the contrast between "screaming" and "clean vocals" in vocal styles within the mainstream. This style became the blueprint for countless metalcore bands that followed (such as Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine, and Parkway Drive). Furthermore, the production by Adam Dutkiewicz has been so influential that it is praised for establishing the sonic standards of modern metal, and his clear yet heavy sound production has become a textbook for 21st-century metal sound.

2. Pre-formation History: The Massachusetts Soil (1990s)

Behind the formation of KsE lay an active hardcore and metal scene in Massachusetts during the 1990s. This region formed a unique underground scene that produced bands like Converge and Cave In. KsE possessed aspects of a "supergroup" born from the dissolution of two important bands active in this scene: Overcast and Aftershock.

Bassist Mike D'Antonio was a member of Overcast, a metalcore band that boasted a cult-like popularity. Following the band's breakup in 1998, he sought a new project that would fuse the ethos of hardcore with the technicality of metal. Meanwhile, guitarists Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel were active in a band called Aftershock. Interestingly, Adam was active as a drummer at the time, not a guitarist.

3. Biography

3.1 Formation, Demo Recordings, and Debut (1999-2000)

In 1999, Mike D'Antonio contacted Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel and began jam sessions. The initial lineup consisted of Adam on drums, Joel on guitar, and Mike on bass. To fill the vacancy of a vocalist, they recruited Jesse Leach, who had been active in Rhode Island bands such as Corrin and Nothing Stays Gold. Jesse's emotional and raw vocal style perfectly matched the sound they were looking for.

The band name "KILLSWITCH ENGAGE" was proposed by Mike D'Antonio. It was derived from the episode title "Kill Switch" of the TV drama *The X-Files*, carrying the meaning of "turning off the switch and restarting (engaging) a completely new system." This symbolized the situation where all members had disbanded their previous bands to make a fresh start.

In the autumn of 1999, the band recorded a four-track demo tape. This demo included their first original song, "Soilborn." On November 18 of the same year, they performed their very first live show as the opening act for In Flames at The Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts. This demo recording garnered attention in the hardcore scene, leading to a contract with Ferret Music.

Debut Album: *KILLSWITCH ENGAGE* (2000)
In July 2000, their self-titled debut album *KILLSWITCH ENGAGE* was released. Although this album featured a sound production with a stronger hardcore coloration compared to later works, Adam Dutkiewicz's songwriting abilities and Jesse Leach's expressiveness were already apparent. Tracks such as "Temple from the Within" and "Soilborn" are still occasionally included in their live setlists today.

3.2 Signing with Roadrunner and *Alive or Just Breathing* (2001-2002)

Following the success of their debut album, the band was flooded with offers from several major metal labels. Ultimately, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE signed a deal with Roadrunner Records, a global metal label home to acts like Slipknot and Nickelback.

During this period, in order to improve their live performances, the band decided that Adam Dutkiewicz would switch from drums to guitar (his original instrument of expertise). Tom Gomes, a former member of Aftershock, joined to fill the vacant drum position. This established a twin-guitar system with Adam and Joel, enabling more complex and heavy riff work.

Album: *Alive or Just Breathing* (2002)
On May 21, 2002, *Alive or Just Breathing*, which marked their major label debut album, was released. This album is widely recognized as a monumental masterpiece in the metalcore genre. The music video for the single "My Last Serenade" was frequently broadcast on MTV2's *Headbangers Ball*, dramatically boosting the band's recognition.

However, behind the success, vocalist Jesse Leach was facing serious issues. Due to a grueling tour schedule, vocal cord problems from overusing his throat, and psychological pressure, he suffered from depression. In 2002, shortly after the band began their national tour, Jesse notified the band of his departure via email and suddenly left the band. Losing their frontman right after releasing a masterpiece album and just as they were taking off was the biggest crisis for the band.

3.3 Joining of Howard Jones and *The End of Heartache* (2002-2005)

In response to Jesse's sudden departure, the band hastily held auditions. Howard Jones, the vocalist of the Connecticut metalcore band Blood Has Been Shed, was chosen. Howard was a different type of vocalist compared to Jesse, possessing both a rich baritone singing voice in the lower register and an overwhelming vocal power for growls (death vocals).

Howard's first stage performance took place on July 12, 2002, at Hellfest held in Syracuse, New York. Afterwards, through the European "Road Rage Tour" and an appearance at the "Beast Feast" festival in Tokyo in December 2002, Howard steadily earned the trust of the fans.

In 2003, drummer Tom Gomes departed to prioritize time with his family. He was replaced by Justin Foley, an old friend of Howard and also the drummer for Blood Has Been Shed. Justin was a highly skilled drummer who held a master's degree from the Hartt School of Music, and his addition made the band's rhythm section more solid and technical. This lineup (Howard, Adam, Joel, Mike, and Justin) would support the band's golden era for approximately the next ten years.

Album: *The End of Heartache* (2004)
In May 2004, *The End of Heartache*, the first album after Howard joined, was released. This work achieved massive commercial success, peaking at No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. The title track "The End of Heartache" was featured as the theme song for the movie *Resident Evil: Apocalypse* and was nominated for "Best Metal Performance" at the 47th Grammy Awards. The album was certified Gold (sales of over 500,000 copies) by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) in 2007.

3.4 Mainstream Success: *As Daylight Dies* (2006-2008)

Following the success of their previous work, KsE grew into an arena-class band. After touring with Ozzfest, Slayer, and Iron Maiden, they released their fourth album, *As Daylight Dies*, in November 2006.

The album debuted at No. 32 on the Billboard 200, selling 60,000 copies in its first week. Particularly noteworthy was the explosive hit of the single "My Curse." This song was featured in popular music video games such as *Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock* and *Burnout Paradise*, introducing the band's presence to audiences beyond metal fans. As a result, *As Daylight Dies* achieved the feat of selling over one million copies in the United States and received a Platinum certification.

During this period's live performances, Adam Dutkiewicz's comical persona became well-established. Contrary to their serious musical style, his humor-filled performances—such as wearing capes with short shorts or donning pizza-patterned outfits on stage—became a trademark of the band.

3.5 The Second Self-Titled Album and Howard's Struggles (2009-2011)

In June 2009, the band released their fifth studio album and second self-titled album, *KILLSWITCH ENGAGE*. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, breaking the band's highest chart record at the time.

However, behind what appeared to be smooth sailing, Howard Jones was suffering from serious health issues internally. For years, he had been struggling with untreated type 2 diabetes and severe anxiety disorder. It was later revealed that around 2009, he was mentally pushed to the brink of attempting suicide. These issues began to hinder their touring activities, and Phil Labonte (vocalist of All That Remains) stepped in as a substitute for a period in 2010.

Meanwhile, Adam Dutkiewicz stayed in touch with former vocalist Jesse Leach and formed a side project called "Times of Grace." They released the album *The Hymn of a Broken Man* in 2011, reaffirming the musical chemistry between Adam and Jesse.

3.6 Howard's Departure and Jesse's Return (2012)

In January 2012, the band officially announced the departure of Howard Jones. The reason was for the management and treatment of his health condition, and it was an amicable split. The band once again faced the crisis of being without a vocalist and announced that they would hold auditions.

While many vocalists applied, former frontman Jesse Leach expressed his desire to audition. The band, especially Mike D'Antonio, was initially skeptical about Jesse's return due to the circumstances of his past departure. However, after witnessing his performance in the audition and his mental growth, they unanimously decided on his reinstatement.

3.7 Rebirth and Evolution: *Disarm the Descent* (2013-2015)

*Disarm the Descent*, the first album after Jesse's return, was released in April 2013. Featuring an aggressive style that reclaimed their early hardcore elements, the album was highly praised by fans and critics as "the return of a high-speed KsE." The single "In Due Time" earned the band their second Grammy nomination. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Rock Albums chart.

3.8 *Incarnate* and *Atonement* (2016-2021)

Released in 2016, *Incarnate* charted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, setting the highest chart record in the band's history. Jesse's lyrics became more introspective, with an increasing number of songs themed around mental struggles and societal divisions.

During the production process of the 2019 album *Atonement*, Jesse faced an ordeal when he had to undergo surgery for a vocal cord polyp. Completed after his rehabilitation, the album included a historic moment for fans. In the song "The Signal Fire," former vocalist Howard Jones made a guest appearance and performed a duet with Jesse. This collaboration became a major talking point as a symbol of the friendship and unity between the old and new vocalists. Furthermore, the band received their third Grammy nomination for the song "Unleashed" from the same album.

During the COVID-19 pandemic period from 2020 onwards, the band was forced to suspend touring. However, in 2021, they held a livestream concert *Live at the Palladium*, where they performed their 2000 debut album and their latest work *Atonement* in their entirety.

3.9 Latest Work: *This Consequence* (2025-Present)

Following the longest interval in their career of about five and a half years since their previous work, their ninth studio album *This Consequence* was released on February 21, 2025, by Metal Blade Records and Japan's Victor Entertainment.

The production was handled by Adam Dutkiewicz, and recording took place at locations including his own Signature Sound studio in San Diego. Regarding this album, Jesse stated, "We had to go to the next level. No repeating ourselves," making it a work that incorporates darker and more atmospheric elements while maintaining the melodic character typical of KsE. Pre-release singles such as "Forever Aligned," "I Believe," and "Collusion" were released. Commercially, partly due to changes in music consumption patterns, it placed at No. 188 on the Billboard 200, but it has ranked high on hard rock and metal specialized charts.
