Atonement is Killswitch Engage's eighth album, on which they balanced heavy breakdowns with melodies that seek redemption. It is their first release on a label other than Roadrunner (Metal Blade) since their debut, and the first album Jesse Leach made after throat surgery in 2018. An accomplished record that balances aggression and lyricism at a high level. It marked the band's third Grammy nomination and was described as their most musically diverse album to date.
The lead single "Unleashed" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. On "The Signal Fire," former vocalist Howard Jones makes a guest appearance, the first time the two singers shared a track together. Testament's Chuck Billy appears on "The Crownless King." Introspective songs also line up, like "I Am Broken Too," themed on mental health. A record carving the band's maturity. It reached No. 13 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Hard Rock chart. The cover art was created by Richey Beckett.
