DOLL$BOXX came out of a single tour someone stood in on. In March 2012 Fuki, then of LIGHT BRINGER, joined Gacharic Spin's national tour as a guest vocalist. To chase down the chemistry that produced, four Gacharic Spin members — F Chopper KOGA, TOMO-ZO, Hana and Oreo Reona — and Fuki formed DOLL$BOXX as a band distinct from either of their own.
The debut album DOLLS APARTMENT came with an absurdly ambitious piece of packaging: of its ten tracks, every one of the nine written for it — all but the DOLL$BOXX version of Gacharic Spin's "Nudirhythm" — got a music video. Two of them, for the lead track "Merrily High Go Round" and for "Omocha no Heitai," went on the limited edition; the rest were shot in a range of settings, from live footage to studio sessions. An artist channel was opened on a video site specifically to release them one after another.
After the debut album DOLL$BOXX went quiet for about five years. The next release, the mini album high $pec, arrived on 8 November 2017. Announcing it, leader TOMO-ZO said the reunion had only been possible because each of them had kept making music in the meantime, and that in gratitude for the fluke of being able to do it again they would throw everything the five years had given them at the band.
For high $pec the band changed direction sharply. The first record had leaned on its concept; this one went after band sound alone, heavy, dark and aggressive. The reasoning was separation — from Fuki's own project, Fuki Commune, and from Gacharic Spin. TOMO-ZO's point was that Gacharic Spin have heavy songs too, but as one option among many, whereas DOLL$BOXX could make loudness the whole point. Fuki's own formulation, offered tentatively, is that where Gacharic Spin chase entertainment, DOLL$BOXX may be stripping it out. Videos, costumes and songs all hardened, and the band photo went from the colourful shoot of five years earlier to one entirely in black.
The five-year gap also changed how the band saw itself. KOGA has said that where it once felt like two things joined together, it now feels like one band, and Fuki agrees that the first time round it had something of a collaboration about it. The origin, as KOGA describes it, was simply that Gacharic Spin were touring without a singer, Fuki sang, and an album followed from that — and having come through it, they became a band.
The first song written for high $pec was "Shout Down" — and it was played in public before any DOLL$BOXX release existed to put it on. Fuki appeared as a guest at Gacharic Spin's headline show at the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall on 24 June 2017 and they performed it there. The reaction from the floor came through clearly, Fuki says, and the album took shape from that point. Oreo Reona and Hana sing on it as well as Fuki, and KOGA describes it as the reformed band's introduction of itself.
The artwork and band logo for high $pec are by Masayuki Kojo, an artist who works in the bushinga tradition of warrior portraiture. He had been a Gacharic Spin fan who came to their shows; he does not normally draw women, and Gacharic Spin were the first exception, which led to DOLL$BOXX as well. Told what the band was about, he said they were strong and had resolve, and drew that. The costumes mix kimono with Western clothing for the same reason: they had an overseas audience in mind. KOGA notes that when Gacharic Spin play abroad, people ask when DOLL$BOXX are coming.
high $pec was released digitally in North America and Europe, and topped the digital chart in Amazon UK's World Music category. Physical releases were arranged abroad too: Sliptrick Records in the United States on 7 December, and Britain's JPU Records on 19 January. All five songs on the record also got videos, the last of them — for "Sekai wa Kitto Ai wo Shitterunda" — appearing on 22 November 2017 to complete the set.
On 15 April 2018 Tokyo Dome City Hall hosted two headline shows on the same day in the same room: DOLL$BOXX in the afternoon, Gacharic Spin in the evening. For four of the players that meant two headline sets in one day. TOMO-ZO calls it unheard of and says the sense of having got through it, once Gacharic Spin finished, was overwhelming. The interviewer noted the visible version of it — the audience's T-shirts turning from solid black in the afternoon to colourful at night.
DOLL$ FESTA, the band's first self-promoted festival on 29 July 2018, was built so that the same people kept walking back on stage. The bill was DOLL$BOXX, Gacharic Spin, Fuki Commune, Unlucky Morpheus and Terada Rick Spin — Fuki singing in three of the five, and the Gacharic Spin instrumentalists playing in three. Where the double headline day earlier that year had put the burden on the Gacharic Spin side, TOMO-ZO observed, this time Fuki would be getting an equal share of it.
Behind the festival was something Fuki had worked out for herself: even with the same person singing, the audiences for DOLL$BOXX, Unlucky Morpheus and Fuki Commune barely overlap. She had only recently realised it — a poll during a Niconico stream showed the age brackets splitting apart. Then, at a post-show meet-and-greet for DOLL$BOXX, she noticed how many faces she did not recognise; mentioning it to the four Gacharic Spin members, she found they had all had the same impression, and concluded that a substantial number of people come to DOLL$BOXX and nothing else.
DOLL$BOXX have carried on into the 2020s. They played Zepp Nagoya on 12 January 2025, and footage of "Sekai wa Kitto Ai wo Shitterunda" from that night was released in May 2026. Then, on 2 April 2026, a post reading "2026 DOLL$BOXX TAKE OFF" and "2026/9/26 (SAT) TOKYO" appeared without warning on their official accounts, along with a teaser and a message on a new website about setting a new course — announcing that something would happen in Tokyo on 26 September.
DOLL$BOXX made their major-label debut on 12 December 2012 with DOLLS APARTMENT on King Records. The two bands feeding into it stood in quite different places at the time: Gacharic Spin were an independent act who had already played in Europe and the United States, while LIGHT BRINGER, Fuki's band, were a young J-metal outfit whose major-label debut album genesis had entered the Oricon chart at 28 that January.
In the same month as the debut album, the band played their first headline tour, DOLL$HOW 2012 — two dates: Shinjuku BLAZE on 16 December 2012 and Shinsaibashi JANUS on the 27th.
The last song written for high $pec, "Sekai wa Kitto Ai wo Shitterunda," is the brightest of its five — though the band do not agree on why. KOGA says there were other heavy songs and she wanted something bright for balance; Fuki says she read it as forward-looking and positive and wrote bright words to match. TOMO-ZO says brightness never crossed her mind — and Fuki's surprise at hearing that is printed in the interview.
On high $pec KOGA moved from a four-string bass to a five. On "Shout Down," playing on the fifth string what she would previously have played on the third changed how the part sat — a discovery, she says. Her role in this band also sits a step further back than in Gacharic Spin, because TOMO-ZO layers so many guitar tracks and works so hard on tone; KOGA deliberately thinned out her notes, and played some parts with a pick. TOMO-ZO's side of it: Gacharic Spin carry a lot of sequenced material, while DOLL$BOXX want the band itself to be the sound, so the guitars are stacked.
The band's first live release was Live Tour 2018 "high $pec High Return," issued on 25 July 2018. What it captures is the Tokyo Dome City Hall show — the afternoon half of the day that also carried a Gacharic Spin headline set.
What each of them picked up during the five years fed into the comeback record. KOGA spent April 2016 to March 2017 presenting a radio show on J-WAVE, and singles out what she learned from one guest — Takuro Sugawara of 9mm Parabellum Bullet — about how words sit on a melody. TOMO-ZO, whose listening ran to hard rock like EXTREME, went after wider phrasing through Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather and a lot of jazz clips on YouTube; the result, she says, is a record full of guitar solos unlike anything she had played before.
Fuki found out the hard way that DOLL$BOXX have listeners abroad. Playing her first overseas event the previous year with Fuki Commune, in Kuala Lumpur, someone at the signing told her they loved "fragrance" from DOLLS APARTMENT. She went to sing it for them on the spot and could not remember a note of it. She wants, she says, to go back to Malaysia and put that right.
Fuki's credit changes depending on which year a source comes from. At the 2012 debut she is the singer of LIGHT BRINGER; by the 2017 reunion Gekirock has her as ex-LIGHT BRINGER, and another piece from the same weeks bills her by her solo project as Fuki of Fuki Commune. In 2026 articles she is Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus. Her place in DOLL$BOXX has not changed at all — but reading the sources out of order makes one person look like several.
