『Parabellum』は、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンがネオクラシカル・メタルの語法を、さらに濃密なギター・オーケストラへと拡張した第21作だ。高速アルペジオ、バロック的なコード進行、クラシックの引用を思わせる旋律が連続し、ギターはリフ、主旋律、伴奏のすべてを兼ねている。 冒頭“Wolves at the Door”の攻撃性、“Presto Vivace in C# minor”“Toccata”のクラシカルな技巧、“Relentless Fury”の疾走、そして表題を冠した“(Si Vis Pacem) Parabellum”まで、インストゥルメンタルを軸に据えながらも、曲ごとに色彩が大きく変わる。“Sea of Tranquility”のような静かな小品も、作品に緩急を与えている。 圧倒的な速さだけでなく、アコースティックな間や重厚なミドル・テンポも織り込まれ、単調さを寄せ付けない。キャリアを重ねてもなお、自らの様式を徹底して追求する姿勢が全編に貫かれている。“God Particle”“Magic Bullet”のような曲でも、圧巻の技巧と劇的な構成が結び付き、アルバムに一貫した緊張感を与えている。技巧と様式美が全面に押し出された、イングヴェイの世界観へ深く浸れる一枚だ。彼のギターの粋を凝縮した、充実の近作と言える。

Parabellum is the 21st album on which Yngwie Malmsteen expands the neoclassical-metal idiom into an even denser guitar orchestra. Fast arpeggios, Baroque chord progressions and melodies suggesting classical quotation follow in sequence, and the guitar serves as riff, lead melody and accompaniment all at once. From the aggression of the opener “Wolves at the Door” and the classical technique of “Presto Vivace in C# minor” and “Toccata” to the speed of “Relentless Fury” and the title-bearing “(Si Vis Pacem) Parabellum,” the songs change color greatly while centering on instrumentals, and a quiet miniature like “Sea of Tranquility” gives the album pacing. Beyond sheer speed, acoustic pauses and weighty mid-tempos are woven in, keeping monotony at bay. Even deep into his career, a stance of thoroughly pursuing his own style runs throughout.
