Struck Down

『Struck Down』は、まだYESTERDAY & TODAY名義だった時期に、バンドが直線的なハード・ロックの勢いを強く打ち出した第2作だ。デイヴ・メニケッティのギターとヴォーカルは粗削りながらも切迫感にあふれ、曲を力強く前へと引っ張っていく。デビュー作で示した攻撃性を保ちながら、演奏はより引き締まり、バンドとしてのまとまりも増している。 表題曲“Struck Down”や“Pleasure in My Heart”“Nasty Sadie”“I'm Lost”といった楽曲では、短く鋭いリフ、押し出しの強いリズム、飾らない歌が一体となり、ライヴ・バンドらしい熱を生み出している。“Dreams of Egypt”“Stargazer (Round & Round)”のような楽曲には、後年のメロディックな展開への萌芽も感じられる。“Road”“Tried to Show You”といった楽曲でも、荒々しいエネルギーと確かな演奏力が結び付いている。この時期のバンドはライヴ活動を通じて演奏力と一体感を着実に高めており、その成果が本作の力強い勢いに表れている。後のY&Tが獲得する洗練されたメロディの魅力を予感させつつ、まずはバンドのライヴ感と攻撃性を色濃く刻んだ本作は、初期の充実を伝える力強い一枚である。

Struck Down is the second album on which the band, still under the name Yesterday & Today, strongly asserted the momentum of linear hard rock. Dave Meniketti’s guitar and vocals, rough as they are, brim with urgency and pull the songs powerfully forward. Keeping the aggression shown on the debut, the playing is tighter and the band’s cohesion has grown. On the title track “Struck Down” and on “Pleasure in My Heart,” “Nasty Sadie” and “I'm Lost,” short sharp riffs, forceful rhythm and unadorned singing act as one, generating a live-band heat. Songs like “Dreams of Egypt” and “Stargazer (Round & Round)” hint at buds of the melodic development to come. Foreshadowing the refined melodic appeal Y&T would gain while first carving the band’s live feel and aggression, it is a strong record conveying the fullness of the early period.
