Yesterday and Today

『Yesterday and Today』は、後にY&Tと名乗るバンドが、地元カリフォルニア・ベイエリアのハード・ロックをまっすぐな演奏で刻んだデビュー作だ。デイヴ・メニケッティのギターと声は、荒々しさの中にも確かな歌心を持ち、ジョーイ・アルヴェス、フィル・ケネモア、レナード・ヘイズのリズム隊が曲を力強く支えている。まだバンド名を「イエスタデイ・アンド・トゥデイ」と名乗っていた時期の、初期衝動に満ちた一枚である。 ブルースを基盤にした太いリフと、勢いのあるコーラスが前面に出た楽曲群は、後のアメリカン・メタルへとつながる攻撃性を早くも備えている。同時に、バンドならではの温かいグルーヴと、メニケッティの表現力豊かなヴォーカルが、荒削りな演奏に確かな深みを与えている。70年代半ばのハード・ロック・シーンの中で、彼らは独自の熱量と個性を打ち出そうとしていた。当時のベイエリアには活気あるロック・シーンが広がっており、若きバンドはそこで腕を磨いていった。のちに彼らはバンド名をY&Tへと短縮し、世界的な成功へと歩みを進めることになる。派手な洗練よりも、演奏の生々しい体温と若さを前面に据えた本作は、長く続くY&Tのキャリアの、確かな出発点として聴くべき原点の一枚である。

Yesterday and Today is the debut on which the band that would later call itself Y&T carved local California Bay Area hard rock with straightforward playing. Dave Meniketti’s guitar and voice hold a firm sense of melody within their roughness, and the rhythm section of Joey Alves, Phil Kennemore and Leonard Haze supports the songs powerfully. It is a record full of early impulse, from the time the band was still called Yesterday & Today. The songs, foregrounding blues-based thick riffs and driving choruses, already carry an aggression that leads toward later American metal. At the same time, the band’s own warm groove and Meniketti’s expressive vocals give the rough playing a firm depth. Within the mid-1970s hard-rock scene, they were trying to assert their own heat and identity. Foregrounding the raw body heat and youth of the playing over flashy refinement, it is a starting-point record worth hearing as the firm origin of Y&T’s long career.
