Earthshaker

『Earthshaker』は、バンドがY&Tへと名を改めて放った、実質的な再出発作にして初期の代表作だ。太いギター・リフ、実直なリズム、そしてデイヴ・メニケッティの感情豊かな歌が強く結び付き、派手な飾りよりも、曲を前へ押し出す演奏の熱とライヴを想起させる切迫感で聴かせる。バンド名の変更とともに、彼らの音楽性は一段と焦点を結んでいる。 “Dirty Girl”“Rescue Me”“Hurricane”“Squeeze”といった楽曲では、ハード・ロックの直線的な勢いと、確かなメロディ・センスが高い次元で両立している。とりわけ長い展開を持つバラード“I Believe in You”は、メニケッティの表現力豊かな歌が映える名曲であり、バンドの叙情的な一面を強く印象づける。“Hungry for Rock”“Shake It Loose”“Young and Tough”“Knock You Out”といった楽曲でも、力強いリフと勢いあるコーラスが緊密に結び付いている。本作の力強いエネルギーは、80年代のアメリカン・ハード・ロック隆盛の先駆けともなった、初期Y&Tを語るうえで欠かせない要素である。攻撃性と歌心を兼ね備えた本作は、後のアメリカン・メタルへとつながる、誠実で熱いハード・ロックの充実作として、今なお高く評価されている一枚である。

Earthshaker is effectively a fresh restart and an early signature work, released after the band renamed itself Y&T. Thick guitar riffs, an honest rhythm and Dave Meniketti’s emotional singing bind strongly, winning through the heat of playing that pushes the songs forward and an urgency that recalls the stage, rather than flashy ornament. With the name change, their music comes into sharper focus. On “Dirty Girl,” “Rescue Me,” “Hurricane” and “Squeeze,” the linear momentum of hard rock and a firm melodic sense balance at a high level. In particular, the long-form ballad “I Believe in You” is a fine song that showcases Meniketti’s expressive singing, strongly impressing the band’s lyrical side. Combining aggression and melodic sense, it is still highly regarded as a sincere, hot hard-rock work leading toward later American metal.
