Black Tiger

『Black Tiger』は、Y&Tがブルースを含んだ太いリフ、力強いヴォーカル、粘りのあるリズムをまとめ上げた、初期の充実を象徴する作品だ。派手な装飾よりも、バンドが一斉に鳴らす音の手触りを重視し、曲にはライヴに近い推進力が宿っている。前作『Earthshaker』で確立したスタイルを、さらに力強く、そしてドラマティックに押し進めた一枚である。 “Open Fire”の勢い、表題曲“Black Tiger”の重さ、“Hell or High Water”“My Way or the Highway”の硬派なロック感覚まで、アルバムは硬質なハード・ロックの魅力をまっすぐ伝えている。とりわけ壮大なバラード“Forever”は、デイヴ・メニケッティの歌の魅力が最大限に発揮された、バンドを代表する名曲として長く愛されている。“Don't Wanna Lose”“Barroom Boogie”“Winds of Change”といった楽曲でも、ブルージーな手触りと硬派な推進力が同居している。“From the Moon”から始まるアルバムの流れは、緩急を巧みに配して最後まで聴き手を惹き付ける、初期三部作の中でも特に評価の高い内容だ。余計な装飾を重ねず、リフ、歌、ビートという三つの核をそれぞれ最も映える位置へ置いた本作は、演奏の体温で聴かせる、Y&T屈指の名盤である。

Black Tiger is a work symbolizing early fullness, on which Y&T brought together blues-inflected thick riffs, powerful vocals and a tenacious rhythm. Valuing the feel of the whole band sounding at once over flashy ornament, the songs carry a near-live drive. It pushes the style established on Earthshaker further, more powerfully and dramatically. From the momentum of “Open Fire” and the weight of the title track “Black Tiger” to the hard-edged rock feel of “Hell or High Water” and “My Way or the Highway,” the album conveys the appeal of hard-nosed hard rock directly. In particular, the grand ballad “Forever” is a signature song, long loved, that gives Meniketti’s vocal appeal its fullest showing. Placing the three cores of riff, vocal and beat each where they shine most, without layering needless ornament, it is one of Y&T’s finest records, winning through the body heat of the playing.
