『Resist』は、WITHIN TEMPTATIONがシンフォニックな壮大さを土台にしながら、電子的な質感とポップの鋭いフックを大胆に取り込んだ作品だ。重いギターと打ち込み的なビート、広がりのあるシンセサイザーが緊張を作り、その中心をシャロン・デン・アデルの透明で強い歌声が貫いている。モダンなサウンドへと大きく舵を切った、挑戦的な一枚である。 “The Reckoning”“Raise Your Banner”“Supernova”といった楽曲では、パパ・ローチのジャコビー・シャディックスやイン・フレイムスのアンダース・フリーデンら、豪華なゲストが参加している。“Endless War”“Mad World”“Trophy Hunter”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は「Resist」というタイトルの通り支配や抑圧に抗う人間の姿を描いており、ディストピア的な世界観が全編を貫いている。従来のファンを驚かせながらも新たな聴き手を獲得した、シャロン・デン・アデルの歌声がモダンなサウンドの中でも力強く響く意欲作である。メタル、オルタナティヴ、エレクトロニック・ロックの境界を軽やかに越えている。抑圧、抵抗、自己決定といったテーマを、より直接的に響かせた挑戦的でキャッチーな一枚だ。

Resist is a work on which WITHIN TEMPTATION, while based on symphonic grandeur, boldly took in electronic texture and sharp pop hooks. Heavy guitar, programmed-like beats and expansive synthesizers create tension, through the center of which Sharon den Adel’s clear, strong voice runs. It is a challenging record that steered greatly toward a modern sound. On “The Reckoning,” “Raise Your Banner” and “Supernova,” star guests such as Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix and In Flames’ Anders Fridén take part. Songs like “Endless War,” “Mad World” and “Trophy Hunter” breathe the band’s full playing too. They lightly cross the borders of metal, alternative and electronic rock. It is a challenging, catchy record that made themes of oppression, resistance and self-determination resonate more directly.
