『Hydra』は、WITHIN TEMPTATIONが大きなシンフォニック・ロックの骨格に、多彩な声と異なる質感を取り込んだ作品だ。ピアノやストリングスが描く広い空間の中で、ヴォーカルは強さと繊細さを使い分け、曲ごとに異なるドラマを作っている。多数のゲストを迎え、これまでにない多様性を示した一枚である。 “Paradise (What About Us?)”“Dangerous”“And We Run”といった楽曲では、ナイトウィッシュのターヤ・トゥルネン、キルスウィッチ・エンゲイジのハワード・ジョーンズ、ラッパーのXzibitら、異色のゲストが参加している。“Silver Moonlight”“Covered by Roses”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作のタイトルは多くの頭を持つギリシャ神話の怪物「ヒュドラ」に由来し多彩なゲストと音楽性を象徴しており、“Let Us Burn”“Edge of the World”“Tell Me Why”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。バンドの幅広い可能性を示した、意欲的な一枚だ。スケールの大きさはそのままに、アレンジの幅を大きく広げている。バンドの表現力を多面的に見せる、意欲的な一枚だ。

Hydra is a work on which WITHIN TEMPTATION took varied voices and different textures into a large symphonic-rock frame. Within the wide space drawn by piano and strings, the vocals use strength and delicacy differently, making a different drama for each song. Welcoming many guests, it is a record that showed unprecedented diversity. On “Paradise (What About Us?),” “Dangerous” and “And We Run,” distinctive guests such as Nightwish’s Tarja Turunen, Killswitch Engage’s Howard Jones and the rapper Xzibit take part. Songs like “Silver Moonlight” and “Covered by Roses” breathe the band’s full playing too. Keeping the largeness of scale, they greatly widened the range of arrangement. It is an ambitious record that shows the band’s expressiveness in a multifaceted way.
