Karma

『Karma』は、WINGERがポップなイメージだけに回収されない、演奏力の高いハード・ロック・バンドであることを示した第5作だ。フロンティアーズから2009年に発表された本作で、キップ・ウィンガーは初期2作の持つキャッチーで曲本位の側面と、後期2作の思索的な側面を一つに溶け合わせることを狙った。タイトルは、バンドがこれまでたどってきた道のりが一巡し、ひとつの円環を描いたことを表しているという。録音はナッシュヴィルで行われ、キップ自らがプロデュースした。 公式ビデオも作られた冒頭の“Deal with the Devil”を筆頭に、重いギター、複雑に絡むリズム、張りのある歌唱が曲に鋭い推進力を与えている。リブ・ビーチによれば、アップテンポでモトリー・クルー的な、頭を振れるパーティ・ロックが並ぶという。一方で6分を超える“Supernova”や“Witness”のように、じっくりと構築される曲も収める。メロディの良さを残しながらも全体の手触りは明確にヘヴィで、技巧とフックを同じ熱量で扱う姿勢がこのアルバムの説得力になっている。ポップ・メタルの枠を超えた、円熟のWINGERを刻んだ密度の高い一枚である。

Karma is the fifth album, on which Winger showed themselves a high-level hard-rock band not reducible to a pop image. Released on Frontiers in 2009, it was Kip Winger’s attempt to fuse the catchy, song-first side of the first two albums with the thinking-man side of the last two. The title, he has said, marks the band’s path coming full circle. It was recorded in Nashville and produced by Kip himself. Led by the opener “Deal with the Devil,” which got an official video, heavy guitars, intricately interlocking rhythm and taut singing give the songs sharp drive. Per Reb Beach, up-tempo, Mötley Crüe-ish, head-banging party rock lines the album, while longer builds like the six-minute “Supernova” and “Witness” also appear. It keeps strong melody while the overall feel is clearly heavy, and treating technique and hooks with equal heat is what makes it convincing. A dense record of a mature Winger, beyond pop-metal.
