『Better Days Comin'』は、WINGERがキャッチーなハード・ロックの骨格に、細かなリズムの変化と立体的なアレンジを組み込んだ第6作だ。フロンティアーズから2014年に発表され、全米トップ・カレント・ロックで21位、ビルボード200で85位に初登場した。5年ぶりとなる本作は、キップ・ウィンガー、リブ・ビーチ、ジョン・ロス、ロッド・モーゲンスタインという布陣でナッシュヴィルにて制作され、『Pull』を手がけた故マイク・シップリーに捧げられている。 曲は一見ストレートに進むが、ギター、ベース、ドラムの噛み合いにはプログレッシヴな視点が息づいている。先行シングル“Rat Race”の推進力、“Queen Babylon”のハードさ、組曲的な“Tin Soldier”の展開、“Ever Wonder”の情感まで、25年を超えるキャリアで培った幅の広さが際立つ。タイトルどおりの明るい感触を持ちながら、演奏は決して軽くない。大きなコーラスと技巧的な演奏が互いを引き立て、聴きやすさと聴き応えを高い次元で両立させている。80年代の看板だけに寄りかからない、地に足の着いた円熟のメロディック・ハードである。

Better Days Comin’ is the sixth album, on which Winger folded fine rhythmic shifts and three-dimensional arrangement into a catchy hard-rock frame. Released on Frontiers in 2014, it debuted at number 21 on the Top Current Rock Albums chart and number 85 on the Billboard 200. This first album in five years was made in Nashville by Kip Winger, Reb Beach, John Roth and Rod Morgenstein, and is dedicated to the late Mike Shipley, who produced Pull. The songs seem to move straight ahead, but a progressive view lives in how guitar, bass and drums mesh. From the drive of the lead single “Rat Race” and the hardness of “Queen Babylon” to the suite-like development of “Tin Soldier” and the feeling of “Ever Wonder,” the breadth built over a 25-year-plus career stands out. Bright as its title, the playing is never lightweight. Big choruses and virtuosic playing lift each other, uniting easy listening and real substance — a mature melodic hard rock that leans on more than an 1980s name.
