『Seven』は、WINGERが持つプレイヤーとしての精度と、巨大なメロディを生む感覚を自然に結び直した第7作だ。フロンティアーズから2023年に発表された本作は、1990年の『In the Heart of the Young』以来となるポール・テイラーの復帰作であり、結成35周年の節目を飾る。キップ・ウィンガー、リブ・ビーチ、1992年に加入したジョン・ロス、ロッド・モーゲンスタインというオリジナル・メンバー中心の布陣で、キップがプロデュースし、ナッシュヴィルで録音された。複雑なリズムや緻密なギター・ワークは随所にあるが、曲の中心にはいつも歌がある。 先行シングル“Proud Desperado”の疾走から、7分半に及ぶ大作“It All Comes Back Around”まで、ハードな曲では張り詰めた推進力を、バラードでは繊細な陰影を、コーラスでは大きな開放感を描く。低くチューニングされたギターがもたらす重さと、プログレッシヴな遊びも同居する。批評家からは、大仰なフックと確かな演奏力を備えた作品として高く評価された。80年代の残像だけに頼らず、長いキャリアで磨いた構成力を前面に出した、熟練のアンサンブルが光る一枚である。

Seven is the seventh album, on which Winger naturally re-tied their precision as players to their gift for enormous melody. Released on Frontiers in 2023, it marks Paul Taylor’s return since 1990’s In the Heart of the Young and celebrates the band’s 35th anniversary. With a lineup centered on original members — Kip Winger, Reb Beach, John Roth (who joined in 1992) and Rod Morgenstein — Kip produced it and recorded in Nashville. Complex rhythms and intricate guitar work appear throughout, but a song always sits at the center. From the drive of the lead single “Proud Desperado” to the seven-and-a-half-minute epic “It All Comes Back Around,” the hard songs push with taut momentum, the ballads shade delicately, and the choruses open wide. The weight of low-tuned guitars coexists with progressive play. Critics praised it as a work with grand hooks and sure playing. Leaning on more than 1980s afterimages, it puts forward the structural command honed over a long career — a record where a seasoned ensemble shines.
