Whitesnake is the band’s greatest success, on which David Coverdale’s bluesy, powerful singing is wrapped in huge guitar riffs and layered choruses. John Sykes’ guitar has weight and flair at once, creating strong tension from the songs’ openings. Keeping the root of the established blues rock, the sound reaches a scale at the very top of 1980s hard rock. The overwhelming menace of “Still of the Night,” the openness of the re-recorded “Here I Go Again,” and the big ballad quality of “Is This Love” eloquently tell of the album’s scale.
