『Slip of the Tongue』は、デイヴィッド・カヴァデールの力強い歌を中心に、硬質で華やかなギター表現を重ね合わせた作品だ。負傷したエイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグに代わって参加したスティーヴ・ヴァイの個性的なフレーズは、曲を単なるリフ主体のロックに留めず、色彩豊かな音の景色へと広げていく。前作の大成功を受けて制作された本作は、技巧的な輝きをまとった一枚である。 再録された“Fool for Your Loving”や、叙情的な“The Deeper the Love”、そして“Now You're Gone”“Sailing Ships”といった楽曲では、大きなコーラスと緻密な演奏が共存している。表題曲“Slip of the Tongue”や“Kittens Got Claws”のような楽曲にも、80年代末らしいスケール感がある。“Judgment Day”“Wings of the Storm”のような楽曲にも、ドラマティックな展開がある。エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグが作曲面で貢献し、ヴァイが華麗なギターで彩るという体制が、本作独特の音楽性を生んでいる。WHITESNAKEのブルース基盤に、ヴァイの技巧的な光沢を加えた本作は、一つの時代を象徴する華やかな一枚である。商業的にも大きな成功を収め、バンドの黄金期を鮮やかに締めくくった。

Slip of the Tongue is a work layering hard, flashy guitar expression, centered on David Coverdale’s powerful singing. The distinctive phrasing of Steve Vai — who joined in place of the injured Adrian Vandenberg — keeps the songs from being mere riff-driven rock and widens them into a colorful soundscape. Made in the wake of the previous album’s huge success, it is a record clothed in technical brilliance. On the re-recorded “Fool for Your Loving,” the lyrical “The Deeper the Love,” and songs like “Now You're Gone” and “Sailing Ships,” big choruses and detailed playing coexist. The title track “Slip of the Tongue” and songs like “Kittens Got Claws” have a late-1980s sense of scale too. Adding Vai’s technical sheen to WHITESNAKE’s blues base, it is a flashy record emblematic of an era. A big commercial success, it vividly capped the band’s golden period.
