『Lovehunter』は、デイヴィッド・カヴァデールのソウルフルな歌声を中心に、ミッキー・ムーディとバーニー・マースデンのギター、ジョン・ロードの鍵盤が豊かな陰影を作り出す第2作だ。ブルースの重さを土台にしながら、曲はハード・ロックとして力強く前へと進んでいく。ディープ・パープル時代を経たカヴァデールが、自らのバンドとしての個性を確立しつつあった時期の一枚である。 “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues”の粘るグルーヴや、表題曲“Love Hunter”の豪快さは、初期WHITESNAKEの本質をよく伝えている。“Long Way from Home”“Medicine Man”“Mean Business”といった楽曲にも、ブルース・ロックの熱と英国的な湿り気が同居している。“Help Me Thro' the Day”“You 'n' Me”“Outlaw”といった楽曲にも、確かな演奏力と歌心が息づいている。1970年代末の英国ハード・ロック・シーンにおいて、彼らはブルースの伝統を現代的な力強さと結び付ける存在として注目を集めた。洗練よりも演奏の熱と人間味を重んじた本作は、英国ハード・ロックならではの手触りに満ちた、味わい深い一枚である。ジョン・ロードの重厚なオルガンが、楽曲に確かな厚みと深みを与えている。

Lovehunter is the second album on which the guitars of Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden and the keyboards of Jon Lord create rich shadow, centered on David Coverdale’s soulful voice. On a foundation of blues weight, the songs push forward powerfully as hard rock. It is a record from the period when Coverdale, having passed through his Deep Purple years, was establishing his identity as his own band. The tenacious groove of “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues” and the boldness of the title track “Love Hunter” convey the essence of early WHITESNAKE well. Songs like “Long Way from Home,” “Medicine Man” and “Mean Business” house both blues-rock heat and a British dampness. Valuing the heat and humanity of the playing over refinement, it is a flavorful record full of the feel particular to British hard rock, with Jon Lord’s weighty organ giving the songs firm thickness and depth.
