『Mane Attraction』は、WHITE LIONがメロディックな持ち味を保ちながら、より長い展開と厚みのあるギターへ踏み込んだ、黄金期を締めくくる第4作だ。アトランティックから1991年に発表され、リッチー・ザイトがプロデュース、A&Mスタジオで録音された。グランジ台頭の逆風で全米61位に留まったが、演奏と楽曲の充実度はファンに高く評価されている。 ヴィト・ブラッタのフレーズは速さを誇るだけでなく、曲の感情を押し上げる旋律として働き、マイク・トランプの歌に鮮明な陰影を与える。8分に及ぶ“Lights and Thunder”は、レッド・ツェッペリンの「Achilles Last Stand」に着想を得た大作だ。デビュー曲“Broken Heart”の再録、湾岸戦争に着想した“Warsong”、そして制作中に急逝したスティーヴィー・レイ・ヴォーンへ捧げた唯一のインスト“Blue Monday”も収める。“You're All I Need”“Til Death Do Us Part”“Farewell to You”といったバラードも印象深い。本作の後、ダンジェロとロメンゾが脱退し、トランプとブラッタはバンドに区切りをつけた。

Mane Attraction is the fourth album, closing the golden era, on which White Lion kept their melodic character while stepping into longer development and thicker guitar. Released on Atlantic in 1991, produced by Richie Zito and recorded at A&M Studios, it stalled at number 61 in the US amid the rise of grunge, but its playing and songwriting are highly rated by fans. Vito Bratta’s phrasing works not just as speed but as melody that lifts a song’s emotion, giving Mike Tramp’s singing vivid shading. The eight-minute “Lights and Thunder” is an epic inspired by Led Zeppelin’s “Achilles Last Stand.” It also holds a re-recording of the debut single “Broken Heart,” the Gulf War-inspired “Warsong,” and the band’s only instrumental “Blue Monday,” a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who died suddenly during its making. Ballads like “You're All I Need,” “Til Death Do Us Part” and “Farewell to You” stand out too. After it, D’Angelo and LoMenzo left, and Tramp and Bratta brought the band to a close.
