Return of the Pride

『Return of the Pride』は、マイク・トランプがWHITE LIONの名の下で、伸びやかなメロディと率直な言葉を再び前面へ出した、実に16年ぶりの復活作だ。フロンティアーズから2008年に発表された本作は、オリジナル・ギタリストのヴィト・ブラッタは参加せず、ジェイミー・ロウ(ギター)、クラウス・ランゲスコフ(ベース)、ヘニング・ワナー(キーボード)、トロイ・パトリック・ファレル(ドラム)を迎えた新体制で制作された。トランプとランゲスコフが共同プロデュースし、オーストラリアとコペンハーゲンで録音されている。 ギターのフックと歌の哀感が交わり、80年代的なメロディック・ハードの感覚を現在形で鳴らしている。8分を超える開幕曲“Sangre de Cristo”や、7分半の“Battle at Little Big Horn”のような大作も並び、“Finally See the Light”“Live Your Life”はシングルとして披露された。過去の再現だけを目指すのではなく、成熟した声と落ち着いた曲調が作品に別の深みを与える。ブラッタ不在への賛否はあれど、バンド名が持つ理想主義的な響きを真摯に受け止めた一枚である。

Return of the Pride is a comeback after a full sixteen years, on which Mike Tramp again brought expansive melody and plain words to the front under the White Lion name. Released on Frontiers in 2008, it was made without original guitarist Vito Bratta, with a new lineup of Jamie Law (guitar), Claus Langeskov (bass), Henning Wanner (keyboards) and Troy Patrick Farrell (drums). Tramp and Langeskov co-produced it, recording in Australia and Copenhagen. Guitar hooks cross with the ache in the singing, sounding an 1980s-style melodic hard rock in present tense. Epics like the eight-minute-plus opener “Sangre de Cristo” and the seven-and-a-half-minute “Battle at Little Big Horn” appear, and “Finally See the Light” and “Live Your Life” were presented as singles. Rather than aiming only to recreate the past, a matured voice and settled songs give the album a different depth. Views on Bratta’s absence differ, but it earnestly takes up the idealistic ring of the band’s name.
