Big Game

『Big Game』は、WHITE LIONが得意とする流麗なギターとメロディを保ちながら、より広い題材へ視線を向けた第3作だ。アトランティックから1989年に発表され、全米ビルボード200で19位、ゴールドを獲得した。前作までより軽やかで折衷的な音を持ち、マイク・トランプとヴィト・ブラッタはパーム・スプリングスのホテルで2週間ほどで書き上げ、短期間で録音したという。トランプ自身は後年、この作品を「半分しか完成していない」と振り返っている。 ヴィト・ブラッタのギターは華やかな速弾きだけでなく、曲の感情を導く旋律として強く機能する。フランス情報機関に沈められた反核団体グリーンピースの船を悼む“Little Fighter”、ゴールデン・イアリングのカヴァー“Radar Love”、南アフリカのアパルトヘイトを扱う“Cry for Freedom”、そしてシングルとなった“Goin' Home Tonight”など、力強いロック曲、カヴァー、メッセージ性を持つ曲が並び、アルバムは単調にならない。発表後はオジー・オズボーンらとのツアーを重ねている。洗練された音像の中にバンドの誠実さと演奏力が確かに残る、充実した一枚だ。

Big Game is the third album, on which White Lion kept the fluid guitar and melody they excel at while turning to broader subject matter. Released on Atlantic in 1989, it reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 and went gold. It has a lighter, more eclectic sound; Mike Tramp and Vito Bratta wrote it in about two weeks in a Palm Springs hotel and recorded it quickly — Tramp later called it “half-finished.” Vito Bratta’s guitar works not just as flashy speed but as melody that guides a song’s emotion. “Little Fighter,” mourning the Greenpeace boat Rainbow Warrior sunk by French intelligence; the Golden Earring cover “Radar Love”; “Cry for Freedom,” on South African apartheid; and the single “Goin' Home Tonight” — strong rockers, a cover and message songs line up so the album never grows monotonous. The band then toured with Ozzy Osbourne and others. Within its polished sound, the band’s sincerity and playing remain — a full record.
