The Last Command

『The Last Command』は、W.A.S.P.が持ち前の挑発的な勢いを保ちながらも、より大きなメロディと、豊かなドラマを、楽曲へと持ち込んだ第2作だ。デビュー作の成功を受け継ぎ、その音楽性を、さらに洗練させている。ブラッキー・ローレスの声は、獰猛さだけでなく、そこに哀感や、切迫感といった、より豊かな感情をも表現し、クリス・ホームズとランディ・パイパーの二本のギターが、その世界観を、厚く力強く支えている。 冒頭を飾る、バンド屈指の名曲“Wild Child”の圧倒的な開放感、そしてライヴでも人気の高い“Blind in Texas”のキャッチーな勢いは、本作を象徴する存在だ。“Widowmaker”の攻撃性、“Cries in the Night”の陰り、そして表題曲“The Last Command”まで、収録曲は、バンドの表現が、決して一方向ではないことを、鮮やかに示している。 刺激的で過激な外見の、その奥にある、確かなソングライティングの強さを、はっきりと感じることができる点が本作の魅力だ。攻撃性と、キャッチーなメロディとの、絶妙なバランスが心地よい。デビュー作の勢いを受け継ぎつつ、より完成度を高めた、初期W.A.S.P.を代表する充実作の一枚と言える。ホームズのギターも冴え渡っている。

The Last Command is the second album on which W.A.S.P., while keeping its native provocative momentum, brought greater melody and rich drama into the songs. Inheriting the debut’s success, it refines its musicality further. Blackie Lawless’s voice expresses not only ferocity but richer emotions such as sorrow and urgency, and the two guitars of Chris Holmes and Randy Piper support that world thickly and powerfully. The overwhelming openness of the classic opener “Wild Child,” one of the band’s finest, and the catchy momentum of the live-favorite “Blind in Texas” symbolize this album. From the aggression of “Widowmaker” and the shadow of “Cries in the Night” to the title track “The Last Command,” the songs vividly show that the band’s expression is by no means one-directional. Its appeal is clearly feeling the sure songwriting strength behind the provocative, extreme appearance. The exquisite balance of aggression and catchy melody feels good. Inheriting the debut’s momentum while raising the polish, it is one of the fulfilling works representative of early W.A.S.P. — Holmes’s guitar also in sharp form.
