W.A.S.P.

セルフタイトルの『W.A.S.P.』は、ブラッキー・ローレスの荒々しく獰猛な歌と、太く力強いリフを軸に、W.A.S.P.が、その過激で危険な舞台イメージを、音楽としても見事に成立させた、鮮烈なデビュー作だ。ロサンゼルスのシーンから登場した本作は、曲は短く、そして直接的で、リズムの強い押し出しと、大きなコーラスの力が、その挑発的な題材を、決して単なる話題作りだけには終わらせていない。 冒頭を飾る、バンドの野心を象徴する名曲“I Wanna Be Somebody”の、突き抜けるような上昇感、キャッチーな“L.O.V.E. Machine”、そしてインストゥルメンタルの“Hellion”まで、収録曲は、荒々しいエネルギーと、フックの鋭さとを、高い次元で両立させている。“Sleeping (In the Fire)”の叙情、“The Flame”のような曲も、作品の魅力を高めている。 過激なショック・ロックとしての外見の奥に、しっかりとしたソングライティングの強さが備わっている点に、本作の価値がある。80年代のLAメタル・シーンの中でも、その過激さで際立った存在感を放った。粗削りなエネルギーと、確かなフックとが同居する、80年代ヘヴィ・メタルの、危険な魅力を濃縮した名デビュー作と言える。バンドの原点がここにある。

The self-titled W.A.S.P. is a vivid debut on which, around Blackie Lawless’s rough, ferocious singing and thick, powerful riffs, W.A.S.P. beautifully established its extreme, dangerous stage image as music too. Emerging from the Los Angeles scene, its songs are short and direct, and the strong drive of the rhythm and the force of big choruses keep its provocative material from ending as mere sensation. From the piercing rise of the classic opener “I Wanna Be Somebody,” symbolizing the band’s ambition, and the catchy “L.O.V.E. Machine” to the instrumental “Hellion,” the songs unite rough energy and sharp hooks at a high level, while the lyricism of “Sleeping (In the Fire)” and a cut like “The Flame” heighten the work’s appeal. Its value lies in how a firm songwriting strength lies behind the appearance of extreme shock rock. Even in the 1980s LA metal scene, it gave off a standout presence with its extremity. Uniting rough energy and sure hooks, it is a fine debut concentrating the dangerous appeal of 1980s heavy metal — the band’s origin here.
