『Inside the Electric Circus』は、W.A.S.P.が持つ荒々しいヘヴィ・メタル感と、危険な「見世物(サーカス)」としての、退廃的なイメージとを、大きなコーラスへと巧みに結び付けた第3作だ。ブラッキー・ローレスの声は、相変わらず挑発的で威圧的だが、クリス・ホームズのギターは、曲の隙間を、鋭く切り裂いていく。前2作の路線を、より演劇的でショーアップした方向へと発展させた一枚である。 冒頭“The Big Welcome”からなだれ込む表題曲“Inside the Electric Circus”の勢い、“9.5.-N.A.S.T.Y.”の強烈な押し出し、そしてレイ・チャールズの楽曲を大胆にカヴァーした“I Don't Need No Doctor”の勢いは、バンドの持つ、圧倒的なライヴ感を、実によく伝えている。“Restless Gypsy”“Shoot from the Hip”のような曲も光る。 過激で退廃的な表現の、その奥にも、キャッチーなフックを決して逃さない、確かなソングライティングが息づいている点が本作の魅力だ。バンドの持つ、エンターテイナーとしての側面が、色濃く打ち出されている。初期W.A.S.P.の、危険でショーアップされた魅力を存分に味わえる、勢いに満ちた一枚と言える。ホームズのギターが冴える。

Inside the Electric Circus is the third album on which W.A.S.P. deftly binds its rough heavy-metal feel and the decadent image of a dangerous “circus” show to big choruses. Blackie Lawless’s voice is provocative and imposing as ever, while Chris Holmes’s guitar sharply cuts the songs’ gaps. It develops the direction of the first two albums into a more theatrical, showy one. The momentum of the title track “Inside the Electric Circus,” pouring in from the opener “The Big Welcome,” the intense drive of “9.5.-N.A.S.T.Y.” and the momentum of “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” a bold cover of a Ray Charles song, well convey the band’s overwhelming live feel, while cuts like “Restless Gypsy” and “Shoot from the Hip” also shine. Its appeal is that a sure songwriting that never misses a catchy hook breathes behind the extreme, decadent expression. The band’s side as an entertainer is strongly put forward. Letting you fully savor early W.A.S.P.’s dangerous, showy appeal, it is a momentum-filled record — Holmes’s guitar shining.
