The Headless Children

『The Headless Children』は、W.A.S.P.が、初期の荒々しいハード・ロックの勢いを保ちながらも、より重く、シリアスな主題と、緻密な曲構成へと、大胆に踏み込んだ、大きな転機となる作品だ。過激な舞台イメージの奥に、実は秘められていたバンドの、確かなドラマ性と、表現の深みが、初めて全面的に押し出されている。ブラッキー・ローレスの歌は、攻撃性だけでなく、曲に宿る、深い緊張と哀感とを、力強く伝えている。 ザ・フーの名曲“The Real Me”の熱いカヴァー、ヘヴィな“Mean Man”、そして社会的な主題を扱う表題曲“The Headless Children”まで、収録曲は、これまでよりも重厚で、聴き応えがある。“Forever Free”の叙情、“Thunderhead”のような曲も、作品の深みを増している。リフの鋭さ、コーラスの力、そして陰影あるアレンジが一体となっている。 挑発的なだけのバンドではないことを、その音楽性で力強く証明した、バンドの成熟を明確に示す一枚だ。しかし、初期からの、あの危険で刺激的なエネルギーは、少しも失われていない。次作『The Crimson Idol』での、さらなる飛躍を予感させる、極めて重要で充実した転換作と言える。ローレスの表現力が光る。

The Headless Children is a work marking a great turning point, on which W.A.S.P., while keeping the rough hard-rock momentum of its early days, boldly steps into heavier, more serious themes and precise song construction. The band’s sure drama and expressive depth, in fact hidden behind the extreme stage image, are fully put forward for the first time. Blackie Lawless’s singing powerfully conveys not only aggression but the deep tension and sorrow dwelling in the songs. From a heated cover of The Who’s classic “The Real Me” and the heavy “Mean Man” to the socially themed title track “The Headless Children,” the songs are weightier and more engaging than before, while the lyricism of “Forever Free” and a cut like “Thunderhead” deepen the work. The sharpness of the riffs, the force of the choruses and shaded arrangement are unified. A record clearly showing the band’s maturity, powerfully proving with its musicality that it is not merely a provocative band. Yet the dangerous, exciting energy from the early days is not lost in the least. Foreshadowing the further leap of the next The Crimson Idol, it is an extremely important, fulfilling transitional work — Lawless’s expression shining.
