Sin

『Sin』は、エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグのギターが持つ泣きの表情と、太いリフの説得力を正面から味わえるハード・ロック作品だ。2020年の復活作に続く第5作で、2023年にマスコットから発表された。ヴォーカルは元イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンやキャンドルマスのマッツ・レヴィンに交代し、クーン・ヘルフスト(ドラム)、ランディ・ヴァン・デル・エルセン(ベース)がリズムを支える。ボブ・マーレットが再びプロデュースを手がけた。 疾走する“Thunder and Lightning”や重心の低い“House on Fire”では、歌メロを支えるために必要な音だけを選び、ソロでは一気に空間を広げる。その緩急が楽曲にクラシックな品格を与えている。7分に及ぶ表題曲“Sin”はレッド・ツェッペリンを思わせる重厚さを持ち、バラードの“Baby You've Changed”などにはエイドリアンが在籍したホワイトスネイク的な色合いも濃い。派手な装飾よりも、ギター、歌、リズムの結び付きで聴かせる。ジャケットには『Heading for a Storm』の鮫が再び登場する。伝統的な欧州ハード・ロックの魅力を、無理なく現代の音に置き換えた一枚だ。

Sin is the hard-rock album that lets you take in head-on the crying expression of Adrian Vandenberg’s guitar and the persuasiveness of thick riffs. The fifth full-length, following the 2020 comeback, it was released on Mascot in 2023. The vocals passed to Mats Levén (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Candlemass), with Koen Herfst (drums) and Randy van der Elsen (bass) holding the rhythm. Bob Marlette again produced. On the racing “Thunder and Lightning” and the low-slung “House on Fire,” Adrian picks only the notes needed to support the vocal melody, then opens up space in the solos. That ebb and flow gives the songs a classic dignity. The seven-minute title track “Sin” carries a Led Zeppelin-like heft, while the ballad “Baby You've Changed” and others wear the strong color of Whitesnake, the band Adrian belonged to. Rather than flashy ornament, it plays through the bond of guitar, voice and rhythm. The sharks from Heading for a Storm return on the cover — a record that eases traditional European hard rock into modern sound.
