『2020』は、エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグがVANDENBERG名義で約35年ぶりに届けたスタジオ作だ。エイドリアンは1980年代の3枚のあと、ホワイトスネイクで“Here I Go Again”のソロを弾くなど長いキャリアを重ねてきた。本作では元レインボーのロニー・ロメロの伸びやかで力強い歌を迎え、ランディ・ヴァン・デル・エルセン(ベース)、クーン・ヘルフスト(ドラム)を擁する新編成で臨んだ。マスコットから2020年に発表され、ボブ・マーレットがプロデュースを担当している。 ブルージーなギター・フレーズ、太いリフ、クラシックなハード・ロックの構えを現代の音で鳴らし、若さを装うのではなく“弾くべき音を知っている”感覚が曲を支える。“Shadows of the Night”の疾走、“Freight Train”の推進力、“Hell and High Water”の劇性から“Skyfall”の大きなサビまで、ホワイトスネイクとレインボーが交わるような堂々とした響きが続く。代表曲を新録した“Burning Heart – 2020”ではルディ・サーゾとブライアン・ティッキーがゲスト参加した。過去への敬意と新しい始まりを同時に感じさせる、力強いカムバック作である。

2020 is the studio album Adrian Vandenberg delivered under the Vandenberg name after about 35 years. Following the three 1980s records, Adrian built a long career, including the solo on Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again.” Here he brought in ex-Rainbow vocalist Ronnie Romero’s expansive, powerful singing, with a new lineup of Randy van der Elsen (bass) and Koen Herfst (drums). Released on Mascot in 2020 and produced by Bob Marlette. Bluesy guitar phrases, thick riffs and a classic hard-rock stance sound in modern production, and rather than feigning youth, a “knowing which notes to play” sense supports the songs. From the racing “Shadows of the Night,” the drive of “Freight Train,” and the drama of “Hell and High Water” to the big chorus of “Skyfall,” a stately sound where Whitesnake meets Rainbow runs throughout. On the re-recorded signature “Burning Heart – 2020,” Rudy Sarzo and Brian Tichy guest. A powerful comeback that conveys both respect for the past and a new beginning.
