『Van Halen III』は、VAN HALENが新しいヴォーカリスト、ゲイリー・シェローンを迎え、従来よりも幅広い曲調と長い展開へと踏み込んだ作品だ。エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンのギターは依然として鮮烈だが、ここではリフの即効性だけでなく、音色や空気感にも焦点が当てられている。エクストリームの元シンガーを迎えた、実験的な色合いの濃い一枚である。 “Without You”“Fire In the Hole”“One I Want”といった楽曲では、バンドの新たな試みが展開されている。“Josephina”“Year to the Day”のような楽曲にも、これまでとは異なる表現が息づいている。“Neworld”“Dirty Water Dog”“Ballot or the Bullet”のような楽曲にも、実験的な試みが息づいている。本作を最後にゲイリー・シェローンは脱退し結果的にVAN HALEN唯一のシェローン期の作品となったが、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン自身がラスト・トラックでヴォーカルを取るなど、随所に意欲的な試みが見られる。バンドの定番像から離れた試みだからこそ、演奏者としての冒険心が見える。商業的には振るわなかったものの、変化の時期におけるVAN HALENの別の表情を知るための、興味深い一枚である。

Van Halen III is a work on which VAN HALEN, welcoming new vocalist Gary Cherone, stepped into a wider range of song styles and longer developments than before. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar is as vivid as ever, but here the focus is not only on riff immediacy but on tone and atmosphere. Welcoming the former singer of Extreme, it is a record with a strongly experimental coloring. On “Without You,” “Fire In the Hole” and “One I Want,” the band’s new attempts unfold. Songs like “Josephina” and “Year to the Day” breathe an expression different from before too. Precisely because it is an attempt away from the band’s standard image, the adventurous spirit of the players shows. Though it did not fare well commercially, it is an intriguing record for knowing a different face of VAN HALEN in a period of change.
