『Shogun』は、TRIVIUMがメタルコアと伝統派メタル、そしてプログレッシヴな構築性を結び直し、壮大なスケールで描き切った野心作であり、しばしば彼らの最高傑作と評される一枚だ。前作までに培った技術とメロディ感覚を土台に、楽曲はより長尺で複雑な展開へと踏み込み、神話や叙事詩をモチーフにした重厚な世界観を構築している。ドラムのトラヴィス・スミスを含む布陣が、緻密なリフと劇的な起伏を一体となって鳴らし切っている。発売当時から批評家に高く評価され、バンドの最も野心的で完成度の高い作品として広く認知されている。 日本語の武士の慣用句を題名に冠した“Kirisute Gomen”の攻撃性、“Down from the Sky”のメロディックな高揚、ギリシャ神話に取材した“Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis”のドラマ性まで、各曲が独立した組曲のような密度を備えている。11分を超える表題曲“Shogun”は、バンドの構築力の粋を集めたクライマックスだ。スクリームとクリーンを織り交ぜたヒーフィーの歌唱と、ボーリューとの超絶的なツイン・リードが、複雑な展開を常に感情へと結び付ける。技術と表現が理想的に噛み合った、TRIVIUMの到達点である。

Shogun is an ambitious work on which Trivium re-tied metalcore, traditional metal and progressive construction, rendering it all on a grand scale — a record often cited as their masterpiece. Building on the technique and melodic sense cultivated up to the previous album, the songs step into longer, more complex development, constructing a weighty world drawn from myth and epic. The lineup, including drummer Travis Smith, plays intricate riffs and dramatic dynamics as one. Highly praised by critics on release, it is widely recognized as the band's most ambitious and accomplished work. From the aggression of "Kirisute Gomen" — named after a Japanese samurai expression — to the melodic lift of "Down from the Sky" and the drama of "Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis," drawn from Greek myth, each song carries the density of an independent suite. The title track "Shogun," running past eleven minutes, is a climax gathering the essence of the band's constructive power. Heafy's singing, interweaving screams and clean vocals, and his virtuosic twin leads with Beaulieu, always tie the complex development back to emotion.
