Falling in Between is a work on which TOTO bound refined pop sense, hard-rock thickness and progressive development within one album. Each member’s high playing is used not just to stand out but to support the detailed rhythm and rich choruses. Centered on the singing of Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather, the band offers a full ensemble. On “Falling in Between,” “Bottom of Your Soul” and “King of the World,” the songs show complex changes yet always return to a memorable melody. Songs like “Dying on My Feet” and “Spiritual Man” house strength and refinement too. Letting you savor the precision of a seasoned ensemble and the flexibility of long-cultivated songwriting at once, it is a strong later-period TOTO work, with a veteran’s composure and creativity breathing firmly throughout.
