Epilogue

『Epilogue』は、TO DIE FORがゴシック・メタルの暗い空気と、親しみやすいメロディを丁寧に重ねた第2作だ。2001年に発表され、ベースのミーッカ・クイスマが去り、初期にも在籍したマルコ・カンガスコルッカが後任に入った。低いギターと陰りのある歌声が、曲に冷たい美しさを与える。デビュー作よりもゴシック・メタル色をやや抑え、80年代メロディック・ロックへの愛着を前へ出した作風でもある。キーボードのユスカ・サルミネンはH.I.M.にも在籍した人物で、その鍵盤が全体の陰影を静かに支えている。全14曲と収録数も多く、聴き応えがある。 過度に複雑にせず、曲のムードを持続させることで感情を伝えている。冒頭の“Crimson Twins”から“Veil of Tears”へ、“Hollow Heart”や“Garden of Stones”は本国のシングル・チャートで首位に立ち、バンドの名を広く知らしめた。締めにはスコーピオンズの“Passion Rules the Game”のカヴァーを配している。発表後はラクリモサとのヨーロッパ・ツアーも実現した。夜のような静けさとヘヴィな推進力を同時に持つ、フィンランド勢らしい一枚だ。

Epilogue is the second album, carefully layering gothic metal's dark air with approachable melody. Released in 2001; bassist Miikka Kuisma left and Marko Kangaskolkka, who had been in the band in its early years, took over. Low guitar and a shadowed voice give the songs a cold beauty. Compared with the debut it eases off the gothic-metal color somewhat and pushes their affection for 1980s melodic rock forward. Keyboardist Juska Salminen also played in H.I.M., and his keys quietly support the shading throughout. At fourteen tracks it's a generous listen. Without over-complicating things, it conveys emotion by sustaining each song's mood. From the opener “Crimson Twins” into “Veil of Tears,” “Hollow Heart” and “Garden of Stones” topped the singles chart at home and spread the band's name widely. The close places a cover of Scorpions' “Passion Rules the Game.” A European tour with Lacrimosa followed the release. A record with the quiet of night and heavy drive at once — very much in the Finnish vein.
