『Knights of the New Thunder』は、TNTが正統派メタルの硬さに、新加入のトニー・ハーネルの伸びやかなハイトーンとロニー・ル・テクロの鮮烈なギターを加えた、実質的な国際デビュー作だ。前作でのノルウェー語から英語詞へと転換し、アメリカ人シンガーのハーネルを迎えたことで、バンドは一気にインターナショナルなメロディック・メタルへと歩みを進めた。曲はコンパクトに疾走するが、リフと歌メロにはすでに後年のメロディックな個性がはっきりと見えている。 “Seven Seas”の開放感、“Tor With The Hammer”“Deadly Metal”“U.S.A.”の攻撃的な勢い、そして“Break The Ice”のキャッチーさなど、北欧メタルらしい透明感と硬派なアグレッションが高い次元で両立している。“Ready To Leave”“Last Summer's Evil”“Without Your Love”といった楽曲でも、疾走感とメロディのバランスが丁寧に取られている。ハーネルの高音は楽曲に軽やかさと華を与え、ル・テクロのギターは技巧を誇示しながらも常に歌を引き立てる。バンドがより洗練されたスタイルへと向かう前の、若く濃密な熱量に満ちた本作は、TNTの新たな出発を告げる充実したメタル・アルバムである。

Knights of the New Thunder is effectively TNT’s international debut, adding new member Tony Harnell’s soaring high notes and Ronni Le Tekrø’s vivid guitar to traditional-metal hardness. Switching from Norwegian to English lyrics and bringing in the American singer Harnell, the band advanced at a stroke toward international melodic metal. The songs race compactly, but the melodic identity of later years is already clearly visible in the riffs and vocal lines. The openness of “Seven Seas,” the aggressive momentum of “Tor With The Hammer,” “Deadly Metal” and “U.S.A.,” and the catchiness of “Break The Ice” balance Nordic-metal clarity with hard-edged aggression at a high level. Harnell’s high register lends the songs lightness and flair, while Le Tekrø’s guitar shows off technique yet always sets off the singing. Full of young, dense energy before the band turned toward a more refined style, it is an accomplished metal album announcing TNT’s new departure.
