Intuition

『Intuition』は、TNTが持つ高音ヴォーカル、技巧的なギター、ポップなコーラスを、いっそう洗練された形でまとめ上げた、バンドの一つの頂点と言える作品だ。トニー・ハーネルの伸びやかな歌とロニー・ル・テクロの色彩豊かなギターが、曲に華やかさと確かなドラマ性を与えている。音は整っているが、リフやリズムにはしっかりとした推進力があり、メロディの美しさと演奏の切れ味が高い次元で両立している。 “Tonight”の甘く開けたメロディや、表題曲“Intuition”の疾走感、“Ordinary Lover”“Forever Shine On”“End of the Line”“A Nation Free”といった楽曲の充実ぶりは、バンドの充実期を鮮やかに映し出している。“Caught Between the Tigers”“Take Me Down”“Learn to Love”“Wisdom”といった楽曲でも、疾走感と旋律美が緊密に結び付き、全編を通してメロディの充実度は極めて高い。ハーネルのハイトーンは軽やかでありながら芯が強く、ル・テクロのギターは技巧を歌の魅力へと巧みに変換していく。ノルウェーのバンドが国際的なメロディック・ハードの舞台で確固たる存在感を示した本作は、80年代末のメロディアス・ロックを代表する充実作として、今なお高く評価されている。

Intuition is one of the band’s peaks, on which TNT gathered its high vocals, technical guitar and pop choruses into an even more refined form. Tony Harnell’s soaring singing and Ronni Le Tekrø’s colorful guitar give the songs flair and firm drama. The sound is composed, but the riffs and rhythm have solid drive, balancing melodic beauty with playing that cuts, at a high level. The sweet, open melody of “Tonight,” the drive of the title track “Intuition,” and the strength of “Ordinary Lover,” “Forever Shine On,” “End of the Line” and “A Nation Free” vividly reflect the band’s prime. Harnell’s high register is light yet strong at its core, and Le Tekrø’s guitar skillfully converts technique into the appeal of the song. A record on which a Norwegian band showed a firm presence on the international melodic-hard-rock stage, it is still highly regarded as a representative work of late-1980s melodic rock.
