Firefly

『Firefly』は、再結成後のTNTが従来の華やかなハード・ロック像を少し引き締め、より重いギターと陰影のあるアレンジへと向かった作品だ。数年の空白を経て再びトニー・ハーネルとロニー・ル・テクロが顔を揃え、その歌とギターの化学反応が甦っている。ハーネルの歌は高い表現力を保ちつつ、作品全体には90年代らしい硬質で落ち着いた空気が流れている。 “Strollin'”“Look To The Sky”“The Firefly”“Movin' Along”といった楽曲では、ル・テクロのギターが独特の色彩を保ちながら、技巧の誇示よりも楽曲のムード作りに徹している。“In A Sentimental Mood”のような落ち着いた場面も、バンドの成熟を感じさせる。“Perk's Blues”“Inception”といったインストゥルメンタル的な楽曲や、“A Taste Of Honey”のような選曲も、バンドの新たな表情を示している。再結成という状況の中で、ハーネルとル・テクロは往年の勢いをなぞるのではなく、より落ち着いた新たな方向性を模索した。80年代の華やかさとは異なる、より内省的で重量感のあるサウンドへと踏み込んだ本作は、従来作との違いも含めて、バンドの転換点を味わえる興味深い一枚である。

Firefly is a record on which a reunited TNT tightened its formerly glossy hard-rock image and moved toward heavier guitars and shadowed arrangement. After a gap of several years, Tony Harnell and Ronni Le Tekrø came together again, and the chemistry of their singing and guitar revived. Harnell’s singing keeps a high expressiveness, while a hard, settled 1990s air runs through the whole work. On “Strollin’,” “Look To The Sky,” “The Firefly” and “Movin’ Along,” Le Tekrø’s guitar keeps its distinctive color while devoting itself to building mood rather than showing off technique. A calmer passage like “In A Sentimental Mood” also conveys the band’s maturity. Stepping into a more introspective, weighty sound different from 1980s glamour, it is an interesting record for tasting the band’s turning point, differences from earlier work included.
